I think the answer there is usually, "I wanted to have my cake and eat it too." or possibly, "I'm a jerk."

But then, I start thinking about Tess of the d'urbervilles and I imagine all kinds of tragic scenarios and then I start feelin sympathy for said character.

I can agree to disagree with you but I would much rather hear "I don't know" than hear some made-up story made to play on my sympathies.
