Today was similar to yesterday.
Tiny walk on the beach around 1 mile, all good, being careful.
Went to the pool
by myself and did reasonably well. Considering it was only my second time in a pool. The lanes here run side to side instead of the long way so I took the shallow lane next to the shallow open area for rec swim. It was 4'6" all the way across so my head and top of shoulders would be out when I was standing. I got a kickboard and started to practice. Push off wall, arms stretched out, kick like mad. Coast as far as the push off sent me and then, still kicking furiously, go no where. Stall. Again. Again. Again. Watching the lane divider to check myself. Yep, total stall every time. Checked having a lifeguard watch me. Kept going past the stall point, kicking hard.
Backwards. Yes folks, it's possible.
Have next lesson scheduled for Saturday morning. May need to check style. The good news is that I didn't let it discourage me. I decided to just feel good about showing up and getting in. I was clearly exercising, huffing and puffing, woop-ass workout. I concentrated on what I could during my little glide-kicks and focused on keeping my chin in the water. (Perilously close to my not-clipped nose.) I was feeling pretty brave about that. The coach had told me to hum if I though I would inhale through my nose and it works.
So, I kicked and hummed, kicked and hummed, the width of the pool (20yds) about 25 times. I kind of lost count, but that is close. They say 36 times is a mile. It took me an hour and twenty minutes and that included two times stopping to practice back 'float' for a couple of minutes.
I are, in the vernacular of Daktari, "knackered". I did remember to take a banana and afterwards grabbed a chaise near the deep lanes and sat in the sun to watch the good swimmers do their thing. I can learn a lot from watching these folks. I can't wait to get some skills and get to do some of those things.
The areas around my shoulders and the middle top of my back are really sore from yesterday as well as my triceps and forearms. I'm thinking it might be from the death grip I had on everything yesterday. I worked on loosening up a bit today and I think it went alright. I'll know more in the morning.
