some of you will remember this image from a national geographic cover in 1984.

her name is sharbat gula, it translates to *sweetwater flower girl. photographer steve McCurry touring this refugee camp approaches sharbat and she approved the request to have her photo taken.

afganistan was in the middle of a bloody civil war.

her trauma, her plight captured in this haunting photograph.

she was found years later, her face bearing the hardships of her life but she survived.

she had absolutely no idea her photo as a young girl had become so iconic.
