First flower of spring pressing
through snow like plum trumpet
proud young mouths awaiting rain.
A waxy and delicate promise
for earthworm month, sparrow season.
Last flower of winter pressing
through snow like end credits
grand gesture, the urgent purpling
wound necessary for a warm
glossy blossoming that will follow.
