That's actually one of my all-time favourite books! Fucking brilliant! I'm still reading Bernard Cornwell's The Burning Land, since I started reading some other stuff too. Also reading The Testosterone Files and all I can say is: finally! I'm not a fan of ordering books off the net, so it took me forever to actually find this in stores...and at a Chapters at that Everytime I went to the Women's Bookstore (guess I could have ordered it from them, but I'm simple minded like that sometimes) to see if they had it they were out for like the last year The third I'm reading is Parrotfish by Ellen Wittlinger. Didn't realise it was a teen book when I bought it and so I'm remembering why I rarely even read teen books as a teen (usually not terribly well written), lol. But overall I think it's awesome that there is now at least one book on FtMs geared toward teens. Wish I'd had something like that to read 10 years ago. |

So last night I was restless and thought I'd buy myself a trashy book for my Kindle and pass out softly after reading a few chapters. Now, let me preface this by saying that some folks think "trashy" equals "romance". I don't read romance. As a matter of fact, I have never read a romance book. Nope, for me, "trashy" is a work of fiction that I can dive into decadently (or sometimes not if it sucks) and forget the world. I had read "The Passage" last month on June and Irishgrrl's recommendation (read it if you havent!) and thought it was pretty delicious so I wanted to find something similar. Went to Amazon and saw this on the "people who bought this also bought": [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Reapers-Are-Angels-Novel-ebook/dp/B003P8Q5JO/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1299298388&sr=8-4"]Amazon.com: The Reapers Are the Angels: A Novel eBook: Alden Bell: Kindle Store[/ame] I must confess, I started reading at 9 last night and finished it this afternoon. It's a short book, about 300 pages but is a beautifully written post-apocalypse zombie fiction that reads much more like good literature than zombie trash. If you liked "The Road", "The Passage" or most Southern Gothics, I highly recommend this one. The imagery is stark and often hard to read (triggery) but is well worth it if you have a few hours to spare. I give it 4/5 stars only because I wished it was longer And don't get me wrong, this isn't "War and Peace" or "Anna Karenina", but it's good fiction. I think you'll appreciate it.

If you enjoy mysteries, you might want to check out Jon Loomis' series, which is set in Provincetown. I just finished High Season, and have started on Mating Season. Detective Coffin is trying to quit smoking and his lesbian partner, Lola Winters is a Butch who saved his life, in High Season. Most of the characters are quirky, and Provincetown is portrayed as a diverse, funky, and interesting place. Loomis scored extra points with me, because of his awareness of transgender issues. I'm looking forward to reading all of his books.

Social Animal. David Brooks. Yes, he is a Republican.... but I am open minded- also interested in his analysis of social connectedness and trust.
