I think if I like something, it is something I like. Which does not mean it is art.
When I look at the Nike of Samothrace in the Louvre and I stay spellbound, transported beyond myself and beyond time, experiencing feelings of unity with the universe, and an ineffable joy, I am in the presence of art. What is called art today rarely transports me beyond myself and beyond time. Some of it pleases me, some of it I like, some of it leaves me indifferent, some of it I despise. I will defend anyone's right to have a velvet Elvis on their mantelpiece, while surrounding myself with Japanese woodblock prints of the Edo period. Elle*
