Time for a bump:
Myajima Island, off of Hiroshima (yes, I realized the irony of such a beautiful place so close to what was once a bombed-out wasteland). This has the famous "floating" torii gate, that I could see from the ryokan window. My daughter and I spent a day exploring waterfalls and feeding deer. If I could have lived on that island and soaked in an onsen every day, that would be sweet.
