Kaleidoscope
I studied the foundations of interpersonal communication. I am aware of the intricate processes playing on secretly. Each partner unaware of the sensitivity and constant eye transfixed on the scale of check and balance that keep a pair together or entices on to leave. She was showering when I heard a chuckle and then my name. She smirks, proceeds to fan it all out, proud as a peacock’s tail. “It’s a case of the shoemaker’s kids who have no shoes.” I respond, eerily calm in the tedious moments preceding a squall, “I feel like I am being blamed.” She postures and readies her reply, “That’s it. I quit.” The air grew thick and solidified. I spend the remaining afternoon researching attachment styles, Myers-Briggs, and relationship repair. I witnessed the heart stopping wreck that totaled this car. I felt the impact and the sting as the shards impaled me. I frantically gather shattered glass, struggle to glue the pieces back; yet all that remains visible is a fractured image multiplying this disjointed skyline, mirroring over and over, the impetus branding my mind. -Rebecca Stone
