South America vent
So the earthquake in Chile.
It KILLS me when people insist that Chile in not developed, that only the US and some parts of Europe and Australia actually are above abject poverty and have any infrastructure. Someone I work with was talking about how some cruise ship guest performers had to ride a bus over the Andes filled with chickens to get to the airport in Mendoza to fly back to the US. I get that it's fun to exaggerate stories, but poultry crossing the international border between two developed nations? really??? There is no way that actually happened...no poultry, no livestock, no fruit and vegetables. Customs and Immigration..... What would be the need? Argentina has poultry of it's own. Laugh. It's not really racism per se...nationalism? US arrogance? I have traveled likely that same route over the Andes and yes, it's the highest part and yes, it is terrifying...but why make it sound like it is backwards because it is in South America? I can tell you there are far more backwards parts of TN than any I have seen in Chile. Also, for anyone who thinks the US has itinerant farm workers who walked here from Chile....look at a topographical map...Atacama desert, Andes, jungle, Columbia, Panama Canal.....and so forth. Maps are our friends. Where was everyone in 5th grade geography class? GRRRRRRR. Every time we have a racism thread, QueenofQueens mentions Nationalism being just as bad, the more I think about it, the more I agree.
