This idiom typically means that it's either your turn or another person's turn to make the next move.

UNLESS....

.... by coincidence, you were playing tennis and you missed that stunning over-the-top power serve and the tennis ball whizzed past you before you could lob it back. If that is the case, then it's ......The Ball *WAS* in your court.

But no worries.... there's plenty of time to tie up the score to an Love-Love score.
