We Bought The Farm......


Farmers worked mortgaged land their entire lives, but could only "buy" it when they died and their insurance paid out. It wasn't neccesarily a demeaning term either. For a poor family farmer working hard to make ends meet, having the mortgage paid off often meant comparative wealth and good-times for their surviving family members. Saying someone bought the farm was a somewhat respectful way of acknowledging that their death had permitted their widow and childen to become landowners (from, Snopes).

What is good for one person ought to be good enough for anyone else.

Unless you've got serious allergies, then this most likely won't work out (I have allergies to lots of things that seem to work for geese, but not me *lol* )

So true. Thanks for all the many ways you've added toward the body of idioms, colloquial sayings and phrase of thoughts! Some I remember, some I frequently use, and other times I've just never heard of things people say to express what's on their mind.
