Ruin someone, upset someone's plans.

Sidebar: The origin of this phrase has been lost, but there are numerous fanciful theories; one concerns a besieged town that displayed a goose to show it had enough food, causing the attackers to set it on fire.

Self explanatory I would think!

Sidebar: Before a certain point in history, it was not a woman’s prerogative to change her mind, or to have much of any choice at all.

Eventually some social orders became enlightened enough to “allow” women some choice over their own lives, and it was so extraordinary a concept that it bore some explaining.
