You're right, this post is "morbid". You'd rather be in the path of a tsunami (which I believe, thankfully, the warning has been cancelled now) than surrounded by some snow in Ohio? Rook, can I ask where you got your information about Molokai? As far as I know there are no 'active' colonies of people with Hansen's disease in Hawaii or the rest of the U.S. Even the low reported numbers of cases that do occur (here) are very treatable and curable. I'm not trying to nit-pick, but I think we need to be sensitive (and not sensationalize a place with a painful history) about a disease whose sufferers have been so highly stigmatized throughout history. |
