You have 2 feet so a pair of socks and a pair of shoes. You have two legs so a pair of pants. The real question is why, if we have 2 arms is it not a pair of shirts. After all, we also say a pair of gloves/mittens. To continue, we have a pair of breasts but don't wear a pair of bras, yet we only have one vagina but wear a pair of panties. I think that it makes no real sense.
