A Most Violent Year
Set during the winter of 1981 -- one of the most crime-ridden of New York City's history -- A MOST VIOLENT YEAR is a drama following the lives of an immigrant and his family as they attempt to capitalize on the American Dream, while the rampant violence, decay, and corruption of the day drag them in and threaten to destroy all they have built. Overview thanks to Rotten Tomatoes: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/a_most_violent_year/ Starring Oscar Isaac as Abel Morales, Jessica Chastain as Anna Morales, David Oyelowo as Lawrence and Albert Brooks. It was a really thoughtful, well-written and excellently acted movie. We both thought it was really good. We had never seen Oscar Isaac before and he was very good as the lead.

It's pretty silly. I like it.

![]() This movie got so many mixed reviews but I happened to really, really enjoy it! Reece really nailed it with this one. "Driven to the edge by the loss of her beloved mother (Laura Dern), the dissolution of her marriage and a headlong dive into self-destructive behavior, Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon) makes a decision to halt her downward spiral and put her life back together again. With no outdoors experience, a heavy backpack and little else to go on but her own will, Cheryl sets out alone to hike the Pacific Crest Trail -- one of the country's longest and toughest through-trails.

![]() Good grief this movie had me curled in the fetal position for quite sometime. I am not so sure that I can even give you a good summary. You just have to see it for yourself. Loved it. Quite brutal but true story. HATED it. I am so disappointed in this movie. I think it was drug out way too long. And, it wasn't as good as American Sniper to me. There was something about it that didn't sit well with me.

Went to see this film yesterday in IMAX
Wow what a film, it keeps you gripped from start to finish. Its based on a true story. A must see film. Also saw the new Woody Allen Irrational Man. This was ok, but not the best Woody Allen film by a long shot. |

Oh I can relate~for that very reason it's often times the main reason I don't mind going to see movies alone! My other trick is to sit in the last row in the back, therefore having nobody yakking thorough the movie either

Have to admit I did have a couple of beads of sweat pop out on my forehead when Channing Tatum danced at Jada Pinket Smith's club Domina on Magic Mike XXL.
Oh, ok, one little shriek escaped my lips. The movie is not Shakespeare but it did have its moments... ...damn Andie McDowell is still looking awfully hot and so is Jada. The GF just shook her head at me.

Went to see both these movies this weekend.
So Burnt first. I thought this was ok, but have seen better cooking related films.and bradley cooper did do a series which was called Kitchen Confidential Which was way better, This film is pretty much like that but just all crammed into a few hours of viewing. It was ok, not special, just light entertainment. Now Brooklyn.... I like this movie a lot, maybe a tad too long. But I would say its very well acted indeed. And it just makes you think about hard it must have been to move to a different country and culture. Its worth a view. |

I found this movie to be emotional, heart expanding, beautiful, touching, raw and so much more ( have Kleenex ready*S if you tend to get emotional, I do*S).

Went out with a close family friend today (girl time) and we saw the new movie by Tom Hanks ... "Bridge of Spies."
Fabulous movie, loved it (Highly Recommend). I don't always get out to see a film, but plan to go see Star Wars when it comes out to theaters during the winter holidays.

Hi Cinephiles! Please remember that a great way to change the disparity in Hollywood is to support film festivals and independent filmmakers.
A fantastic program of films by and about queer women, sponsored by the Scottish Queer international Film Festival will be happening in Scotland and London November and December 2015. Here's the info: SQIFF - Queer Women In Love / This November and December, SQIFF is taking part in BFI Love with two programmes of films and events. Queer Women in Love is a diverse and exciting selection of films by and about lesbian, bisexual, and queer women with events across the UK. I Do? considers queerness and marriage marking the one year anniversary of changes to the marriage law in Scotland. Part of BFI Love, in partnership with Plusnet bfi.org.uk/love.

Carol.
Ok... Firstly I want to say that if you haven't read the book yet, then go see the film first. Because to fit all that the book entails into a few hours is a challenge. I will also say you must go and see it, purely to make up your own mind. This film is still with me now, and I am marinading it over. I think possibly its because I had read the book first, and was so consumed by its plot and more so the two women, their emotions & undeniable connection, that this film just fell a tad short for me. (I may say this in haste though after a breather away from it) But again this is only a personal view. I don't dislike this film by any means and I know of other people who simply adore this film. For some reason I didn't really feel consumed by it. But don't let my review stop you going to see it. I will say that the sets are beautiful, and the acting is exceptional. And unlike the book the very long intro between the two women isn't as long in coming. Perhaps after waiting a whole year for this movie, reading and watching teasers I had this so built up in my head that nothing could compete. Please go and make the effort to see it, then at least you can judge for yourself. I will take a break from Carol, then come back to it when its out on dvd and hopefully my view will have changed. I hope you all love it. |
