If you are like me and can deal with the smell of liver cooking, some people cannot, your dogs will surely think Santa has arrived when they get a whiff of these cookies.

Oatmeal Liver Cookies

1 lb. of raw liver
(chicken livers work and they are cheap)You could also add a 16 oz can of liver dog food in place of the liver if that is your preference.

1 egg, slightly beaten (keep the eggshell, you will add it into the mixture)

5 c. dry Quick Quaker Oats

2 heaping T. Flax Meal

warm water as needed

Mix egg and shell, liver and flax in a blender or food processor. Gradually add oatmeal alternately with warm water to the meat/egg. Mix until it is like a thick cake batter. Bake in a greased 8x11 pan at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Cut in squares. Place in plastic bags and refrigerate. Can be frozen.

I used crunchy PB, but followed the recipe. This recipe made 40 2 1/2" 'bone'-shapped cookies....yeah, I just happened to have bone-shaped cookie cutters lyin' around...

It's an easy knead ~ not a lot of energy taken there. Maybe turn it over 10-15 times. Roll~out's a cinch. I just used parchment paper. Cooled on a rack about 10-15 minutes then put them in a zip~lock bag.

And Lucy does love them. They will be given at Christmas. I guess NOW she's gonna want her own apron.

Yay..

Yup I tend to go for easy!!! I cut them into strips for non gift treats...break off a piece and there ya go..

Lucy. does.not.have.her. own.apron??????

Here's a pretty good site for some pup recipes..
http://www.dogtreatkitchen.com/peanu...it-recipe.html

I have always heard that dogs cannot digest bread... I'm not sure if it is because of gluten or flour itself or what.

In the past, I have given the dogs more dehydrated treats.. like bean chips, etc. or sweet potato mashed into a yummy flavor and dehydrated them. I would make a "spread", and spread it out on layers in the dehydrator. I started doing this when I used to backpack a lot, as it was better and easier to pack loads of dehydrated healthy food than heavier stuff. They seem to like the crunchy bits and I could eliminate the flour etc that may disagree with them. I haven't had time to do good stuff for myself lately, much less the pups.

Some great ideas here! Thank you for the thread Sachita!!!

They really do. I just realized I forgot to add the garlic in to the ingredients list. I usually throw a couple of diced whole garlic cloves into the mix, you can also add parsley if you do desire.

You're welcome Jess! kiss those sweet schnauzers

Dog biscuits are flour and many dog treats are some kind of weird gluten after product. I'm not saying its healthy. I give the dogs here plain biscuits, milkbones but even with that I don't get carried away. I think a cookie or muffin made with oatmeal or some quality grain but I think your idea about a "pup" roll up lol is excellent. I had an Excalibur but its not working right now. I have dehydrated sweet potatoes for them and apples. I eat these dried fruits I buy in a bag, sugar free and do you know they will gobble up dried cherries?

Let's keep exploring good healthy treats for the fur babies!

anyone give their dog whole raw carrots to nibble on?

I personally try to stay away from grains, flours, sugar etc for my foods and I also avoid feeding them to my dog, so he eats grain free kibble. I also give him raw carrots, chunks of apple on occasion, and I toss the ends of chopped raw veggies into his dish, such as the end of asparagus, cabbage cores etc. He loves this stuff. He also gets raw meat though. He is a happy guy. lol
