According to many, I should be ashamed of myself, but...

The Hunger Games Trilogy.

The_JD recommended it, and I could barely put it down! It's getting its second read-over now (just starting Catching Fire again.)

To give myself a break, I'm rereading Battle Royale (yes, same basic premise, but I read Battle Royale many years ago.)

i actually just finished the hunger games trilogy too
my niece and nephew were hyping it up pretty good but i feel rather indifferent about the series

right now i'm mid way through 1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created - Charles C. Mann

the author clumsily tries to distance modern feelings toward some of history's more horrible aspects by using weak academic reasoning but i'm really enjoying it
so much to ponder with this book

i'm rereading the hunger games now with a group of friends on another board

the first two books are still annoying me for certain reasons but...they're growing on me. i want to see the movie now. (okay, lenny kravitz as cinna is kind of amazing.)

still on the beginning of sex & disability. it's good so far.

i've also been rereading ruthless trust by brennan manning on and off

it's one of my favorite religious/devotional books.

I got an e-reader last week - - so right now I'm just rereading free "classics."
Finished Pride & Prejudice, on Sense & Sensibility. Have some Sherlock Holmes up next, I think.
Although I'm tempted to give The Hunger Games books a look.

Currently reading "Start Where You Are" by Pema Chodron, which is a wonderful Buddhist text that benefits from having some background knowledge but is still very accessible if you don't know much about it. Highly recommended - it will enrich you and possibly change your life, whilst NOT being another vague self-help book.

I've always loved fiction, but I learn so much from non-fiction that I find I'm drawn to it more often

I'm on a Sookie Stackhouse spree- finished From Dead to Worse, now reading Dead and Gone. I haven't been a big fan of Charlaine Harris' writing- I've mostly stuck with the books because I like the HBO series so much (and things are so whacked out on THAT show right now I thought maybe the books might shed some light...but, um, no.). Anyway, I noticed the writing in From Dead to Worse, and the one after seemed better- the jokes were less forced and less corny, there were more cool pop culture references, and all the characters felt like they fit together a bit more seamlessly. I began to wonder if maybe From Dead to Worse was the first of the book series to be written after the HBO series began, and sure enough, yes...it was. It's almost like Charlaine Harris has seen now seen the edgier style of the show, and has adjusted her writing to match it. Interesting concept, really.

I also finished Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain. Fantastic book... validating, at least for this introvert. Lots of details of psychological studies, with a fair amount of neurobiology thrown in, as well as the author's personal anecdotes. If you've ever sat in class getting annoyed by the talkative students who aren't actually adding anything worthwhile to the class discussion, or if you'd like some pointers on how to maximize your own quiet strengths, this book is for you.

Next up: The Violinist's Thumb: And Other Lost Tales of Love, War, and Genius, As Written by Our Genetic Code by Sam Kean.

I am currently enjoying The Cold Dish by Craig Johnson, the first book in the Walt Longmire series! The tv show is great, but per usual, the books are better!!!

the new jim crow: mass incarceration in the age of colorblindness by michelle alexander. i might have posted about it in here before...i started and stopped it in july and i'm picking it back up

i agree with a lot of the criticism that exists about the book that she ignores much of black history and the larger context of colonialism, capitalism, eurocentrism and white supremacy. but i do think the book is really good and needed because there are so few really accessible analyses in existence about these issues. i hope her book, along with the growing body of work on transformative justice by other writers, will pave the way for more.

i'm also beginning beyond inclusion, beyond empowerment: a developmental strategy to liberate everyone by leticia nieto. i've heard really good things about it and i have a feeling it's going to be one of those you have to read several times
