Recently, the word "intersex" has come into preferred usage for humans, since the word "hermaphrodite" is considered to be misleading, insulting and stigmatizing

Chimeras:
Imagine a mother denied custody of her children because her DNA points to her not being their mom. Or another mother who cannot get a kidney transplant from her son because they do not share enough DNA.

A human chimera is made up of two sets of cells with DNA as different as any two siblings’ DNA. This is because a chimera is the result of fraternal twins fusing together at a very early stage in development.

A DNA test is usually done by taking some blood or cheek cells and looking at the DNA. This is fine if the person has the same DNA in every cell (which is usually the case). But a chimera can run into problems.

Because different body cells will have different DNA, it is possible that a DNA test can give incorrect results for a chimera.

Example:
Imagine that a woman has one set of DNA in her cheek or kidney cells and a different set in her eggs.
Now she has a DNA test done on her children and one done on her kidney or cheek cells. When the results are compared, she looks like the children’s aunt instead of their mother. This is what happened in the custody and kidney transplant cases.

The children looked like nephews or nieces with one set of cells. And like sons and daughters with the other set of cells.

Beavers (the furry animals) eat wood pulp. But, their bodies cannot get the nutrients from it when they first eat it - so - they eat it again after they pooh it out. Somehow they know the difference because as soon as they pooh it out the second time they immediately use it to plug holes in the dam. Beavers are also little clean freaks and spend most of the their time in their den cleaning their den and themselves. They are also very family orientated and will welcome family members back into the den even if they come back a mate.

I once watched a discovery channel docu where they showed a fox pick up a stick and take it in the water. The fox swam around and around carrying the stick. Slowly the fox went further and further under the water. It let go of the stick and sunk just enough so that only the tip of her nose was pushing the stick around. Then it pushed the stick away and swam back to the shore. It took the scientists a little while to figure out that the fox had fleas and as she swam around they were forced to move to higher ground - on her head and eventually her nose and finally onto the stick. I thought that was sooooo cool!!!!!!!

We left a live tree up till Easter. We did quit using the lights sometime in Feb...

If you live with skunks, you need this recipe. 32oz peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, 2T dish soap. I use Dawn, cause it cuts the oil well. This works on pets, and people.
