Default Chef

I'm a foodie. A foodie-lifer, in fact. My whole life has revolved around food. My mother was French. My father, a restaurateur. So, I was really interested in this film.

Chef had great potential. There are some poignant scenes, for sure. It's hard to make a film about chefs, I think, without there being a subtext for enhanced storytelling. The subtext here is the genesis of food trucks and how social media made them what they are in culture. Then, eventually, back to bricks and mortar.

I don't know how much Twitter invested or paid for this film. But, I'm willing to bet a lot since it's as much about them as it is about food.

If you're interested in chefs, a good book about chefs, I think, anyway, is "Kitchen Confidential" - raw and honest.

Cheers and tables!

Its nostalgia weekend. Redid Mary Poppins and Sound of Music.

Also saw 2 new to me ones:

Thoroughly Modern Millie - I might have enjoyed the music, flappers, and dancing if the undercurrent of the film wasnt about a hotel for single women who were targeted, drugged, and sold into "white slavery".

Breakfast at Tiffany's - I liked this one, except the main characters name was Holly Golightly. It took a bit for the colonoscopy flashbacks to dissipate.

Up next is My Fair Lady.

I saw this on Sunday

I was not aware that it was a religious movie but they didn't throw it in the audience's face too much. It was tolerable and cute.

I saw this movie as well

I absolutely love Adam and Drew, so this was true fun for me. Formulaic, sure. But still funny and still thoroughly enjoyable.

I watched The Fault in Our Stars

My work family rented it and I have oodles of down time...

Wasn't really surprising; I grasped the premise from the previews. Sometimes my brain craves things that are meant for younger audiences. This reminded me of Perks of Being a Wallflower which I loved...

Heaven is For Real

This one could have gone sideways and gotten preachy preachy but it didn't feel that way to me. They did a good job with it.

Trust Me

It was listed as a comedy. I would say dramody is a better listing. I picked it expecting funny bits but they were far and few. I liked the lead character and a couple supporting characters but I felt a bit hoodwinked that I didn't get the movie it was portrayed as in the listing. Overall, it was okay, but don't pick it if you want an actual comedy.

They Came Together

Do. Not. Watch. This. Movie. It's so bad, I wanted to cry because it has some really good actors in it.

I'm going to hit the theatre tomorrow and see The Judge. I'm so excited! Great story. Great actors. Did I mention that I'm excited to see this?

Gone Girl

With his wife's disappearance having become the focus of an intense media circus, a man sees the spotlight turned on him when it's suspected that he may not be innocent.

Director: David Fincher
Writers: Gillian Flynn (screenplay), Gillian Flynn (novel)
Stars: Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris

Read the book and I thought it was terrific and I also thought the movie was very well done.

Default The Best Offer.....

The film tells a story of love and deceit,in the world of high-end art auctions and antiques. The story revolves around Virgil Oldman (Geoffrey Rush), an elderly and esteemed, but somewhat eccentric, managing director of an auction house. Oldman is hired by a reclusive young heiress, Claire Ibbetson (Sylvia Hoeks), to auction off the large collection of art and antiques left to her by her parents. For some reason, Claire always refuses to be seen in person.

I figured out this movie in about 2 seconds but I'd suggest giving it a try. It does move slow just to be forewarned!

Heaven is for real. Good movie based on a true story. It moves a little slow, but its based on a true story, real life moves slow

A documentary called Standing in the Shadow of Motown. Excellent and the music is fantastic!!!

The Fox. This is a bit dated now but still worth a look at. This is from 1967 BEFORE lesbian movies could have a happy ending..lol

Evil Dead 2 from 1987

Laughable now but was scary as hell back then!

Yet Bruce Campbell makes the movie.

Barfly (1987)
____________

Barfly has held up over time and it's as good as I remember. Written by Charles Bukowski and somewhat autobiographical (I think), it's about people who unapologetically live on the edges of society. Loved the chemistry and honesty between Henry (Mickey Rourke) and Wanda (Faye Dunnaway)—job well done by both.

It's vulgar, violent, insightful, funny, sad, and good.

Bukowski makes an appearance in one of the bar scenes.

Weird, I *just* rewatched that yesterday. I saw it when it came out. There was an evening of charles bukowski at the Rio (the sort of funk repetory theater here that does readings, bands, cult films, animation fests, B-fests etc) and I couldn't go as i didnt have the dosh, so decided to watch it on my own.

It was good. I love mickey rourke and fay dunnaway... both incredibly good actors. bit short for me. I forgot it was more a 3-4 days in the life of.

This movie won't appeal to everyone and as you can probably detect from the brief description it's not so much a feel good movie but it sure has its moments. We thoroughly enjoyed it! Check it out and see what you think

OH! I loved it!

It was very long, but I watched it at home, and took a couple of mid-movie breaks to cook dinner and make a phone call, so it didn't feel interminable to me at all.

I really appreciated the simple beauty of it.

I also saw the 'Imitation Game' recently. I liked it because I'm really happy Alan Turing's story is being told, but it felt more like a 2-part Masterpiece Theatre production, rather than a feature film. And while I'm grateful Turing's story is being told and he is being recognized for his genius and his incredible accomplishments - I was disappointed that they glossed over/barely touched upon the tragic end of his life, the government administered chemical castration, the loss of his career, the loss of his motor functions, the scorn of society - all because he was gay.

Last night we watched a older movie that was very good. The Mighty

Stars: Kieran Culkin, Gena Rowlands, Sharon Stone

This tells the story of a strong friendship between a young boy with Morquio's syndrome and an older boy who is always bullied because of his size.

(Adapted from the novel, Freak the Mighty)

The Duke of Burgundy

Per Rotten Tomatoes:

Day after day, Cynthia (Sidse Babett Knudsen) and Evelyn (Chiara D'Anna) act out a simple yet provocative ritual that ends with Evelyn's punishment and pleasure. As Cynthia yearns for a more conventional relationship, Evelyn's obsession with erotica quickly becomes an addiction.

Per my GF and I:

It felt very long, heavily stylized, too many art-house type camera shots, brief erotic moments and was confusing at times.

The critics gave it 95%, viewers gave it 77% and we gave it about a 50%.

It is On Demand.

Everly, kind of like a Kill Bill flick. Genesis and I liked it.

An action/thriller centered on a woman who faces down assassins sent by her ex, a mob boss, while holed up in her apartment.
