Default What's Happening in Your World Today

Thought it might be interesting to see what kind of stuff - activities, events and such that is happening in different parts of the country and world.

Here in Massachusetts, it is the final day of the Pan-Mass Challenge - a nationally known bike riding-funding raising marathon. Here's their blurb:

About the PMC:

The Pan-Mass Challenge is an annual bike-a-thon and a pioneer of the athletic fundraising industry that today raises more money for charity than any other single event in the country. The organization was founded in 1980 and has since raised $303 million for cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund. The PMC is a
model of fundraising efficiency. The PMC donates 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar directly to the cause. In 2010, the PMC generated 60 percent of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue and it was Dana-Farber’s single largest contributor. Over 230,000 individual contributions were made to last year’s fundraising campaign. In 2011, PMC cyclists will ride
with the goal of raising $34 million for Dana-Farber.

The Ride:

The Pan-Massachusetts Challenge is a fully supported bike-a-thon — with food and water stops, mechanical and medical assistance, luggage transportation, and lodging — that runs through 46 towns across Massachusetts. Approximately 5,000 cyclists ride in the event. Cyclists choose from 11 routes of varying mileage designed to cater to all levels of cycling
strength and time availability. There are six two-day routes that range from 153 to 190 miles and five one-day rides that range from 25 to 110 miles. In 2011, cyclists are required to raise between $500 and $4,200 to ride in the PMC, depending on the chosen route.

When:

The 32nd annual PMC will be held on August 6 and 7, 2011. The ride has two starting lines on Saturday, Aug. 6, in Sturbridge and in Wellesley, and five finish lines in Provincetown (2), Bourne, Wellesley or Sharon on either Saturday, Aug. 6 or Sunday, Aug. 7.

Who:

Cyclists travel from 34 states and six countries to ride in the PMC. Nearly 300 riders are cancer survivors or current patients. Some PMC cyclists are weekend warriors, others are trained triathletes. Many PMC participants ride in honor of a family member or friend fighting the disease. Cyclists range in age from 13 to 87. The average PMC cyclist is 43 years
old, trains for three months, solicits 40 sponsors, and raises more than $6,000. During PMC weekend and throughout the year, nearly 3,000 volunteers donate their time and 200 corporations provide in-kind donations of products or services. The PMC was founded in 1980 by Billy Starr, who remains the event’s executive director, an annual cyclist and a
fundraiser. It is presented by the Red Sox Foundation and the New Balance Foundation.

So, what's happening in your part of the world?

Default Victory Day - the history, the controversy......

Today is Victory Day in my home state of Rhode Island.

Victory Day, or VJ Day, commemorates the anniversary of Japan’s surrender to the Allies in 1945, ending World War II. The atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima on August 6 and Nagasaki on August 9, and the Soviet Union’s invasion of Manchuria in the previous week made the surrender inevitable. President Harry S Truman’s announcement of the surrender set off street celebrations from coast to coast in the United States. The official end of the war did not occur until September 2, 1945, when General Douglas MacArthur accepted the Japanese surrender from General Yoshijiro Umezu aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.

President Truman declared September 2 as the official VJ Day in 1945. In the newspapers across world that day, there were hundreds of photos of soldiers and civilians rejoicing together.

VJ Day is a legal state holiday only in the state of Rhode Island. Rhode Island has celebrated this day since 1948.

This day is not without controversy tho. As per Wikipedia:

Although September 2 is the designated V-J Day in the entire United States, the event is recognized as an official holiday only in the U.S. state of Rhode Island, where the holiday's official name is "Victory Day",[16] and it is observed on the second Monday of August. There have been several attempts in the 1980s and 1990s to eliminate or rename the holiday on the grounds that it is discriminatory. While those all failed, the state legislature did pass a resolution in 1990 "stating that Victory Day is not a day to express satisfaction in the destruction and death caused by nuclear bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki."[17]

Here is an article in the local paper about the day thru the eyes of a soldier who was there: http://www.projo.com/news/content/VI...v16.41447.html

Today marks the opening of the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation's grand opening of its Interpretive Learning Center. The weekend grand opening includes speakers Senators Daniel Inouye, Norman Mineta, and Alan Simpson, as well as broadcast journalist Tom Brokaw, and others; there will be a dedication ceremony, banquets, reunion and a hike up Heart Mountain. The Heart Mountain Foundation was established to preserve, interpret and commemorate the site where nearly 14,000 Japanese Americans were confined during WWII. The creation of the Interpretive Center was a collaboration between citizens of Wyoming, scholars, former internees and their descendants, as well as interested supporters throughout the United States. I am proud to have volunteered for this organization, and regret that I can not be there this weekend. Heart Mountain left an indelible mark on my soul.

To learn more, visit the Heart Mountain Foundation's web site.

Default Little League World Series and the Prez

My home state of Rhode Island has a team in the Little League World Series this year. They played their first game today in Pa. and unfortunately lost. It's both exciting and nerve wracking.

In other news Obama landed on the Vineyard yesterday for his vacation. Air space in the area is restricted. I have forgotten how loud big planes are. Cant begin to tell you how many times today I have been tempted to yell out....Incoming!....before diving under the couch.
