Although Canada is for the most part more liberal and accepting than our American friends, we too have our struggles. A couple whether they are married or not should also ensure that they have Power of Attorney's to act in a financial capacity and a power of attorney for health. A living will is also a good idea to ensure your wishes are carried out, because during challenging times the biological family who have been so accepting and loving may not be so receptive. If you share a home it is best to ensure both names are on the title, so that you don't lose that as well. The other misconception we have here is that long term common law partners share the same privileges that married people do....you do not at time of death. So if your partner has a pension from their employer ensure your name is on it, however, the government pension will go to the last known spouse or estate so although you may be opposed to marriage and have been with your partner for a long time, you may wish to consider this. Just some tidbits for my Canadian folks.
