The BFP Compound: Family Land
Let's pretend that Jack and I finally just won the Arkansas Powerball for $173 million.
After taxes, that's about $100 million left over. Let's pretend that we're building a compound on about 400 acres just north of where we currently live. Would you want to live on a BFP compound? What skills can you contribute? Would you want to do community meals every night in the "Mess Hall"? Would people still need to pay something into the system like rent, even if it was only nominal? Do you think you'd get tired of living with family all year long? What pro's and con's can you see to this idea? What input do you have? Let's speak it into the Universe!

Count me in
I would like it to be a BFP community compound I have cooking and baking skills I'm a hard worker and would help in the garden I know will be created I think if a person works FT on the compound, then no rent If one chooses to work outside of it, then yes, rent Bills still need to get paid after the purchase price of said compound In order to survive for years to come, we'd have to sell our wares A garden bounty after we take only what we'll use, can be sold to restaurants Same goes for fresh eggs and milk I mean, if we're going to do this right, we need some farm animals to sustain us I think sitting down as a family and sharing a meal with conversation will be important to the longevity of the compound I also think that as long as I have my own bedroom (my space) I'd never get tired of living as a unit BTW, just make sure you put in plenty of bathrooms because we're going to need them Oh and I'm thinking group health insurance will be mighty low once the Planet peeps start arriving to settle in Perhaps we may even snag us a doctor and a nurse or 3 to live on this compound Oh and the family that plays in the dirt together, stays together The only con I see would be having to show someone of the premises because they don't want to pull their own weight

Honestly, though, I don't think communal life is for me. I love y'all, but I know my limits. We'll come visit!

See, I love the idea of farm animals! Fresh eggs!
I keep envisioning a "game night" or something where we get together in an activity hall or a gym or something and play poker, board games, have karaoke, etc. Cause I'm cheesy like that!

Yes, I would totally live on the BFP compound.
The skills I could contribute to are: Cooking, Entertainment, I have great interpersonal and organizational skills and can type 106 wpm...I have fast fingers (wigglin' eyebrows) and NO I don't play the piano (I have been asked this over time since i'm a fast typist) I have so much more to offer too but will spare everyone until the final interview.. Yes, people should pay rent for things we need so some of us could go into the city and purchase the things we need for our livelihood. No free rides people. We must all contribute. Mess Hall is a good idea, but also if folks want to have some "together time" they can feel free to do that too. Hmmm, that's the question, we would get tired of living with family all year round. I think it would be normal if folks had a few quirks about stuff, but it would have to be addressed accordingly as folks would need to respect one another. We're human after all and I'm sure there would be a few things that could get on nerves... Pros: OUR Community finally having our own living ground(s) and us having normality for once without hestitation or fear. Never having to say goodbye to our b-f family Not having to wait a year to reunite to see each other We can just be ourselves because baby, we were born this way Cons: "Possibly" too much togetherness which could drive some of us insane Having NON-invited guests trying to crash our living ground out of curiosity and constantly having that stress There is way more I would like to add but I'm getting writer's block... Ohhhhhhhh *raises hand.
Count me in. I've always loved the idea of living in a compound anyway. All inclusive. I volunteer to start the hospital wing up. We have a few more nurses on this site that will help i'm sure. I'll find a doc to visit a couple times a week and can video chat when needed. There are a few that owe me We can give flu vaccines, fix booboos, treat resp problems and the like. Anything major we can transport you outta there by helicopter. We can take turns being oncall afterhours. We can have a small pharmacy with simple antibiotics, diabetic supplies and cold treatments. Oh and don't forget the vitamins!!! Sharing bathrooms would be a pain. I vote for everyone having a room that includes a bathroom and shower. Standing in line to teetee or brush my teeth is not my cuppa.

I'm thinking with 400 acres - people could opt to build their own dwelling or duplex??
Still communal in the sense that we're together, yet can still have that sense of privacy. There of course could be total comunal living - but unless you have done it you should read up on it ...because it can be trying and tiring at times. I'd rather buy a plot of land in the BF compound and build a small place or duplex where I love my neighbors. I am not handy in the garden, but if this were to happen after I retired I'd be more than happy to pitch in and I know how to make yogurt, bread, ect etc. There was a time when I lived in a commune in the early 70's and we had a great little garden. Would love permanent BF space where I know and love my community and neighbors. Like any private community - we have a gate system that keeps the rif and the raff out? yes?

Hmmm, guns? I think it's a good idea if I "do not" own one wouldn't you agree Snowy?? Dusa?? Jack??
Our cats must be with us and, as an fyi...they are trained to be on leashes. Therefore, if cats are off limits, then we will not be moving to the compound. Nobody puts "Bossy and Pippi in the corner"! (said in my best Patrick Swayze accent from "Dirty Dancing") Wait, lemme put my Boston spin on that... "Nobody puts Bossy & Pippi in the corner you muthafuckas"!! *Ahem* that's a lot better... |

I'm thinking with 400 acres and builders, we could have houses or apartment buildings or just rooms
I suppose if you're paying rent, it'll be what you can afford Kids should be allowed as well as any animal you may already have I even like the idea of having the yearly reunions on the compound for those that don't want to live there Renting rooms out for this reunion at great prices should bring many besides everyone will be so envious, they'll want to see the place Oh and June, I don't care where the place is built as long as we're all in it together As for the too much togetherness...that's what vacations are for

Well it would have all the potential problems that the site has: some people just there to cause trouble/conflicts, some people being intolerant and bigoted with respect to others, etc. And then those who might take advantage of the kindness and generosity of others. Duplicity, etc.
I guess what I am saying is that there would have to be a rigorous screening policy before letting people in. And there might be politics around said screening policy, and camps might spring up and get divided, etc. I am not saying it's not a great idea, I guess I am just aware of all the potential pitfalls of such a thing. Nothing that is good and right and important is easy. |

We had no conflict, we had no duplicty, like any small community there would be problems that could arise, but this would be reality - and not the internet where all we can do is time out someone. People wouldn't move there that weren't interested in being there and sharing the space IMHO.
