Forgot to mention this earlier... I've been getting these Minute Ready-to-Serve rice packs; they're rice perfection! Individual bowls....one minute in the microwave. I've had the brown and the brown & wild ( ). I'll get that multi-grain medley if I can ever find it around here!!!! I mostly use it as a filler to add to soup, beans, peppers, etc... It also helps me to get my whole grains in. http://www.minuterice.com/en-us/prod...ServeRice.aspx

We've been making some radical changes as a family, for the better! Stacy and our youngest daughter, Sarah, have switched to a vegetarian diet, and I am doing really well on a pescetarian diet (fish & seafood). We ate meat at every meal pretty much prior to this, so HUGE change. Jake, our 17yo still eats meat, but not really any red meat any more, just lean chicken breast and fish mostly. We all gave up dairy milk because we fell in love with almond milk. Stacy and I do smoothies for breakfast, and sometimes lunch. A typical smoothie for me, for example, is about 1.5 cups chocolate almond milk, a large banana, ground flax seed, about 1/2 cup aloe vera juice, a handful of blueberries, and a scoop of Amazing Grass SuperFood powder (http://amazinggrass.com/product/68/O...-servings.html). We swear by the Amazing Grass - one scoop gives you more fruits and veggies than most of us normally consume in a day, plus it's full of vitamins and minerals - and I find that it curbs my appetite (maybe because my body is getting what it needs) and gives me energy. Yes, it's a little spendy, about $70/100 servings, but if you look at how much less crap you're eating in place of it, you'd probably come out ahead! Another thing we LOVE, and eat a lot of are the Morningstar brand of veggie burgers, lots of yummy flavors like mushroom lovers, prime grillers, tomato and basil, etc. Boca brand is also good! We put them on a whole wheat pita with hummus, spinach, portabella mushroom slices, and a little fresh grated cheese. They are SO good!! |

Often times when we think we are hungry, we are actually thirsty. Many are also simply unaware of hydration status, we obfuscate it with things we drink that do not hydrate. Like anything with caffeine for example or something very sweet. Even those non-caloric sweetners have real reprocussions to our bodies awareness. And not just about hydration, those sweetners do a number on your neural pathways in your brain, as they are so much sweeter than anything found in nature. And for the record, they were originally developed during WWII by the Nazis' for their chemical warfare programs. The history of our chemical concoctions is a fascinating tale often told by a fool, but I digress~ Back to hydration... By the time your mouth is actually dry, you are very dehydrated. And if the skin on the back of your hand is tenting, then you are in a serious serious way. Drink water. Drink soup, water down those healthful fluids of all kinds. Get your water, anyway you can figure out that works for you. Amazing to finally embrace water, as it was very difficult for me after my surgery to tolerate water. My surgeon suggested I could just add a tea bag to the water, without even brewing it, and it can trick the brain, make it more palatable - for those like me that have a hard time drinking water. Today, thank goodness, things have change dramatically - I stay very hydrated. And it does seem to flush out not only fat, but other wastes, toxins, etc. Today, I water down most everything I drink and enjoy my teas, which are not really tea per se. My most recent discovery is a rose hips and dried lemon peel concoction that is simply divine. And low sodium bullion with herbs, another lovely discovery I find very satisfying. Not much into sweet, give me savory anytime, please and thank you very much! Between the suggestions here for healthy snacks and the hydration solution, you all will do great. Food is not the enemy, nor is the miracle that is our body, no matter what size or shape we may find ourselves. Off to get a cup of tea and a piece of fruit... Never give up on yourself, Di | |

OMG who first suggested almond milk in here? Whoever it is, I owe you a smooch. I have been craving sweets and was about to dive headfirst into a pint of Hagen Daz Rocky Road....but instead I got a carton of Silk dark chocolate almond milk. Delicious! I had a glass....and no more chocolate craving.

That's awesome. I had tried the soymilk and found it okay....but the almond milk is really yummy to me. I've been aware of dairy more with all the reading I'm doing (thanks Dapper) and have been trying to cut down our dairy consumption. Our challenge was what to do on cereal more than anything....and Rooster still likes the ol' glass of milk with dinner. He likes the plain almond milk...so that's fantastic.
