I would say eye contact and a smile is good. At work it may not necessarily register to the Butch, some of us are oblivious. I agree that since we are more obvious, then it is easier for the Femme to approach. However if the Butch has some spirit then asking is an option. As a Boi I have asked a woman if she was seeing someone, pretty safe question. Or the, "I would like to take you to coffee." That is usually a safe neutral.
