I was hoping to catch all the contenders for best picture by now, but I still haven't seen a few (Martian, Mad Max, Room). I may catch one but not all before the awards are given.

Of the 2015 films I've seen so far, nominated or not, I like Spotlight the most followed by Straight Outta Compton.

I've seen all of the ones you're missing, Orema. They are all fantastic for different reasons. Mad Max is a visual smorgasbord of excellence. Even if it's not someone's kind of genre, no one can argue that it's not extremely visually stimulating. For some, it might be too much so.

Room's power is all internal. Such good acting and such an emotional and mental struggle for all involved. It's relevant on a lot of levels.

The Martian is definitely a big box office movie and you can tell the funding that went into it, plus Matt Damon's a cutie patootie and he's actually funny in this. Not a laugh every minute kind of funny, but when life gives you lemons, you draw on them and make lemon faces kind of funny.

I enjoyed all three for different reasons. You've seen all the ones I haven't. Out of those, who do you feel has the edge?

Thanks for your thoughts, Gemme. I'll make a point of watching all three and I may be able to catch one tonight.

I think Revenant has the edge. Leo has been a man for awhile, but he proved to be a "man's man" in this film and I think that goes a long way in Hollywood.

But, I know Hollywood loves Speilberg and Hanks, so Bridge of Spies may come out on top.

Just finished Martian and I thoroughly enjoyed it—more than I expected. Damon was really good and I thought his performance was better than Leonardo's in Revenant.

It can't be easy carrying a movie when you're often the only person on screen. Good job by him.

I saw Brooklyn, Room, Spotlight, Carol and Danish Girl. I do think Spotlight deserved Best Picture. I think Alicia Vikander did a superb job of acting in The Danish Girl and was happy to see her get an Oscar. What I don't understand is why her nomination was in the Best Supporting Actress category and not in the Best Actress category. She was in practically every scene in the movie.

Probably the same reason The Martian was entered into the Comedy category of the Golden Globes....to give her a better chance of winning the award. There was no way Brie Larson was not going to win for Best Actress.

I finally watched Spotlight yesterday.

It was so absorbing, well-done and profoundly sad.

I could not believe it actually got made and that the church did not somehow influence the filmmakers to bury it.

Of course, this morning, I read of yet one more place. When are pedophile priests going to be weeded out? The sheer enormity of the problem floors me.

This morning:

Staggering' abuse cover-up in Altoona-Johnstown Catholic diocese, grand jury says

March 1, 2016 10:30 AM

By Peter Smith / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

ALTOONA, Pa. — Hundreds of children were molested, raped and destined to lasting psychological trauma by at least 50 priests and others associated with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown across half a century, a state grand jury has found in denouncing coverups orchestrated by two bishops and enabled by the law enforcement officials they controlled.

The conspiracy amounted to “soul murder,” said the report by the 37th Statewide Investigating Grand Jury, released today nearly two years after the grand jury was impaneled.

At a press conference here this morning, Attorney General Kathleen Kane said that horrendous acts of abuse were committed by priests, and called it a ”day of reckoning.”

The report said no one could be charged for the crimes it detailed, either because they happened too long ago under the statute of limitations for such prosecutions, a time limit that the report recommends be extended, or because of witness trauma.
