I love this saying! Years ago, a small company I worked for used to give out awards to employees who went above and beyond the call of duty and called it The Extra Mile Award. If you earned that award, which I did on several occasions, your name was highlighted in the monthly company newsletter to employees and if you earned enough 'outstanding extra mile awards' the company would promote you or give you an annual raise worth more than an regular annual raise in pay or treat you to an undisclosed surprise at the end of the year (usually right after Christmas).

The Extra Mile Award was based on client feedback to company headquarters private phone call centers concerning I'll treatment toward company clients or Extra Mile service given to loyal company clients. It was a really good program based on meeting or exceeding client needs and ensuring client loyalty.

More than what is expected of someone. Exceeding the expectations of one's job, position, or role.

However in this day and age in the work place it seems one must always go above and beyond the call of duty and then you still might come into work one day and be told " SO SORRY your position has been eliminated" I am SO glad to be out of that friggin rat race!

A rat race is an endless, self-defeating, or pointless pursuit. It conjures up the image of lab rats racing through a maze to get the "cheese" much like society racing to get ahead financially.

The term is commonly associated with an exhausting, repetitive lifestyle that leaves no time for relaxation or enjoyment.

my current workplace campus of the past three years is a much more sophisticated type of work place in that there is layer upon layer of accountability between an variety of workplace agencies (federal, state, private practice or small business to regional or national business enterprise) which is essential to maintaining harmony between neighboring businesses or the clientele which sustains any business on campus.

HR among all campus businesses maintain exceptional organizational attention to client needs as well as intercultural, multicultural and an wide diversity of employment practices.

Most of my work life has been centered upon service based industry, so it's an welcoming opportunity for me to highlight my caché of professional skills.

I've never been employed...ie I've been self employed for about 50 years. The only rat race I really know personally is that of the world of homo and femo-sexuals who see opportunity to exploit the loneliness and kindness of others. It's a race to devour vulnerability. Rats are the detestable, sociopathic creeps amongst us and those who try to invade our "planet" because we are such vulnerable and open emotional beings.

Far as I can figure, this is the right thread. Never occurred to me that "rat race" only referred to "job" situations. I was simply suggesting that "rat race" is also useable in terms of where we struggle in communities of relationships where primacy is often based on "doing what it takes" to "get along" and pleasing
some so get accepted amongst others, and to have had the courage to "step out".

To me, "rat race" is the obverse of being drowned at the bottom of an unaccepted, pool that you just didn't have the social skills to avoid.

I'll make it simple...so many of our most wonderful, interesting and surviving Sisters got left behind behind they when they simply couldn't find a way to do more than be tossed into the mass of "interesting" examples used by "successful leaders of the movement in their own rise to the top.
