In October, take a walk from the Botanic Garden's visitor center to the Conservation Science Center to see the many colorful perennials and fruit-bearing shrubs. Marvel at the Japanese maples as they turn red like fire and, if you're lucky, you'll see the filigreed sumacs transform into a remarkable mix of orange, green and red.

If you around in November, take an autumn walk in the Dixon Prairie. It's also a peaceful escape.

The lush garden fills with colorful fall blooms like balloon flowers, black-eyed Susans and Moonshine Yarrow. After a phone call earlier today, by someone raving about some edible they had just inhaled from here, I'm adding it to my "places to visit" after the pandemic dies down!

Bad news for anyone who was still holding out hopes of sipping spiced wine from a boot mug in Daley Plaza this winter: Christkindlmarket, the annual holiday market usually hosted downtown and in Wrigleyville, has officially been canceled. In place of the the in-person event, vendors that usually participate in the German-themed Christmas market will sell their products online beginning on November 1.
