Ike Quebec, sax player, is one of the first musicians signed onto the Blue Note label by Alfred Lion.

I love Blue Note. They’re one of the few record companies that didn’t rip off their artists. Lion wasn’t known for taking undeserved writing credits like Berry at Motown and what’s-his-face at Chess Records. Blue Note also didn’t take advantage of their female artists like Berry at Motown and whats-his-face at Chess and so many others.

Grant Green wrote this song and is the guitarist on this album. I think the “Charlie” in this title is for Charlie Christian, another guitar player, who influenced Grant Green, not Charlie Parker as many people mistakenly believe.

Same here, thanks for sharing this post about this Blues artist. If he tours out here in my home town area (we have a huge Blues Fest here each year!!), I will definitely go hear him play. Awesome recording! Thanks Orema! 💐

There’s a version of this song by Lionel Hampton I’ve been searching for 20 years. I heard it on one of those “100 best jazz songs” all-day radio programs and I can’t find it. I’ve found versions by him, but not one at a ridiculously slow tempo that’s beautiful.. I’ll just keep searching. In the meantime, I’ll play versions by artists like Sarah Vaughan.

Did you hear the song on a local jazz radio station?? I ask because we have a jazz radio station (2, actually) here in our metro area: KMHD (on campus at Mt Hood Community College) and KBOO, both stations have producers who would know or could find out this type of music trivia. If your jazz radio station played it, I’m guessing they would know. But if not, let me know because I might could give you contact info to both radio stations here and I’m betting they could help you, my friend.

Thanks, Kätzchen. That's a good idea. I heard it on a station in another state, but we have some really good jazz stations here and some of the DJs know about different versions, tempos, personnel. I think I'll contact them. Thanks again!
