Love to talk to y'all. Are you hibernating for the winter?

We've been swamped with snow and arctic temperatures in my neck of the woods. The weather people on the news were excited this morning because we're finally in the 20s. Thank goodness I'm retired and don't have to drive much in this weather. I'm also still mending my wounds from the election. I'm quiet when I'm not well and I'm chatty when I'm good. I haven't checked out, but I shut down when I'm not good and become over-protective of my thoughts, feelings, actions. Not sure how I (we) will recover, so for now I'm going with my inner voice that tells me to be quiet and still. I think a lot of us are feeling/thinking the same. It's good to see you postiing and I hope you're well, Keri.

I like to travel, but haven't been anywhere in ages. I was hoping to go to Africa (Ghana, Kenya, ?) this year for the first time, but that's not gon' happen anytime soon. That dream will just have to stay on my bucket list for now. I also want to see the comedian and actress Lunell when she appears in Detroit, but my Ex will be there and I don't want to run into her. I can always find a jazz festival to attend, but I wanna do something different. So, I've decided to go to a WNBA game nearby in the Illinois/Indiana area. They know how to hoop, they look good, and I'd have a swell time. Gives me a reason to support a sport I love and reason to stretch my traveling legs. I just have to decide what game, where and when. The more I think about it, the more I like it. As you can see, traveling is on my mind. I don't get to do it much, but I get a bug every now and then. What about y'all? Anyone going anywhere anytime this year or the next? Anyone been anywhere they can recommend?

Hi Everyone,
I have been quietly lurking on this thread for years, waiting until I turn 60 to join. I am now 59 3/4 (I will be 60 on May 13). Are y'all really going to make me wait 3 more months to join, or can I get a pass? Y'all are an interesting group and I want to play. Please!

Hi to Keri, Orema, and GM
![]() Happy almost 60th birthday to you, GeorgiaMa’am! I turn 66 over Memorial Weekend. Orema? It sounds like you have a plan to enjoy a few outings, soon! I’m glad you can do something special just for you. I don’t have plans to travel… I don’t trust our airlines transportation system. I don’t have much faith in trains either. If I go anywhere, I stay locally, within a five mile radius. I’m not interested in contributing to the overload of pollution Mother Earth is enduring. But that’s just my values and boundary system. There’s lots to do and enjoy in my area, so staying home is worth it (in my mind). And with so much of our country under attack by the sinister people ruining our country, it’s better if I stay local in case something happens that causes a fuck ton of heartbreak.💔 Enjoy your day and stay strong, friends. — K. ![]() ![]()

I used to travel quite a bit, on the continent. I have tons of family in Canada, mostly in Ontario. Before 911, it was nothing to cross the border. Answer a question or two and you're on your way. Now you have to have a passport. I've been trying to get myself to do the paperwork to get a new passport, but so far I'm procrastinating. Right before Covid I was planning some travel. I can't remember if I've said this in this thread or not, but I'm handicapped and use a scooter full time for mobility. So there are considerations for me about travel that most people don't have to think about. Inside the U S, I don't have to worry, but a lot of the world is not accessible. Complicates things. I found this crip tour group. They had several tours they were qdvertising. Unexpectedly, as I had never thought of going there before, the one to Africa sounded awesome. I was talking to the tour group people getting it planned, and whamo bango here comes Covid. Kind of haven't planned any travel since then, sad to say. Well, I've gone places in Florida, but not outside. Thing is, my friends are all coupled. Being a third wheel is not my desire, so I always have to go alone and I am not a big alone person. I'm running out of steam, so I'll say goodnight. This post is pretty long, anyway. Smooches, Keri |

Hi Everyone!
Thanks for the warm welcomes! I used to travel, too, before my knees got so bad. I usually traveled with one other, but I often traveled alone. My favorite trip with a partner was to the island of St. John. We camped on the beach in the National Park for a week. My favorite trip with a friend was to London. I won tickets on the radio to fly there and meet Peter Gabriel and Sionead O'Connor (and see their concerts). My favorite trip alone was a drive up the east coast from Georgia to New Jersey (I think it was New Jersey) where I quickly ran out of all my remaining money in a casino and had to turn around and head back home. I made it about 10 days altogether on that trip, I think. I have done some local-ish traveling with my bad knees lately, but nothing adventurous. These days I rent a mobile scooter. On my most recent trip to the beach I rented a mobile sand scooter! That was fun. I plan to do some more local-ish trips over the next year or so, and after my knee surgery I plan to do some more serious traveling. Orema, may I ask, how long after your knee surgery was it before you felt capable of travel?

Happy March everyone! I hope this is finally springtime, though just in time for peak storm season here.
Ohio is certainly not as "wow" as Ghana or a sunny island, but it is Grainne's destination in late April for a genealogy conference, four days of classes, workshops, and social activities. I'm also receiving a certificate due to having proved my roots in Ohio pre-1850. On my trip there (driving from my home), I'm stopping for a day in the happening city of Fort Wayne, Indiana for research at the Allen County Public Library, one of the largest genealogical libraries in the country. It's actually reported to be a pretty city, with interesting sites, so I'll probably do some exploring, too. Lately, with my great push at my family history, a research trip appeals even more than sightseeing somewhere (though a British Isles cruise next year is calling my name). I must be the only person on the planet who would go to Fiji not for sun and beach, but for scouring the local cemetery, searching for a cousin who became an anthropologist there in the early 1900's. I found his story fascinating. I'm now glad to be a solo traveler. I want to research all day, or be in classes, without worrying about boring my companion (unless we were doing the same thing).

Apologies for the garbled message. I shouldn't write so early in the mornings. My knees were good enough to travel after 6 months. I may have been better before 6 mths. I'm sure my doctors would have cleared me to travel after 3 months, but I waited to be cautious. I think younger people might heal more quickly.
