LGBT Youth resources for Manassas, VA?

Hi all,

I have a 14 y/o buddy I met on the online game I play, and he is a gay kid with very intolerant and potentially violent parents. He is afraid to come out to them for fear of being beaten. I am hoping there is someone here who might know of some local resources for him for counseling, gay youth support groups, etc. in his town. He isn't old enough to drive and can't go out to DC or a larger nearby city to find support. Any information or ideas you guys might have I would be grateful for. I really want to help this kid, he is miserable. Thanks everybody.

Hey Drew,

I know it's a bit of a drive to Richmond, but this group might be able to help point the young fella into a safe direction. Sorry I don't know more about the Northern VA area. Hope it helps.

There are a number of National Hotlines which can direct him to resources close by, or get him the help he needs ASAP!

Your heart is so so kind, with that be careful talking with a minor with violent parents, especially meeting him online just keep your guard up and be really careful how you talk with him so it does not come to bite you in the ass.

Richmond isnt that far but he is only 14 and doesnt drive. Theres not much up that way. isnt Harrisonburg up that way?

maybe contact one of these people by email and ask if there are any teen support groups and resources.

Yeah Ms Snow, I have thought of that. But she is miserable and all I am doing is directing her to local resources for help. I am not contacting her by email or phone or getting involved further in that way. I just want her to have some support cause I know I can't be the only or the best source. I am being a careful, responsible adult.

No problem at all! I used to work with this group and there is a wide age range. They also try to do outreach to nearby areas, as they are acutely aware of the need!

Harrisonburg is actually further south. Think, between Charlottesville and Roanoke. I would actually think if ROSMY can't send her in the right direction, then perhaps checking in with HRC in DC or some of the larger groups that do outreach. I know the Richmond group has been pretty well established and does all sorts of outreach in smaller areas.

I would actually be surprised if "something" isn't forming in the Manasses area. It is basically a suburb of DC now, as so many folks who live there commute to DC or the NOVA area.

Glad the kiddo isn't down in our neck of the woods, as things here are still very tentative for sexual minority youth. Although, it does seem a hella lot more tolerant than it was when we were young.

I'm in Northern VA, and I might be able to get my hands on some resources. When I was teaching at a local high school here, I was the advisor for our Gay Straight Alliance, but I would be surprised if many (if any) Prince William County Schools house any chapters. I work in behavior mod now in a private school, and we do have some services that work with some kids, and I know of one kid in particular who has someone who set up some outreach for him... he is a 15 year old gay male... but I can try to check and see if I can get some info on that, i.e. what the services are and if they provide a wider range of services that includes females as well as males. If you want to contact me privately here or put her in touch with me and my partner, we'd be happy to help.
