Upon reading this quote and thinking on the words I wonder how many of you feel the same as Jim Pell?
In our household you lived and breathed your heritage, and ours was a blended house divided we were taught the heritage of our ancestors from both sides. Discrimination based on blood quantum wasn't allowed my family wouldn't permit it, their pride in heritage and beliefs ran strong. "There is no such thing as 'part-Cherokee.' Either you're Cherokee or you're not. It isn't the quantity of Cherokee blood in your veins that is important, but the quality of it . . . your pride in it. I have seen full-bloods who have virtually no idea of the great legacy entrusted to their care. Yet, I have seen people with as little as 1/500th blood quantum who inspire the spirits of their ancestors because they make being Cherokee a proud part of a their everyday life." ~Jim Pell: Principal Chief of the North Alabama Cherokee Tribe ~

Luther Standing Bear Oglala Sioux
1868-1937 The American Indian is of the soil, whether it be the region of forests, plains, pueblos, or mesas. He fits into the landscape, for the hand that fashioned the continent also fashioned the man for his surroundings. He once grew as naturally as the wild sunflowers, he belongs just as the buffalo belonged... Out of the Indian approach to life there came a great freedom, an intense and absorbing respect for life, enriching faith in a Supreme Power, and principles of truth, honesty, generosity, equity, and brotherhood as a guide to mundane relations. |

Black Elk Oglala Sioux Holy Man
1863-1950 You have noticed that everything as Indian does is in a circle, and that is because the Power of the World always works in circles, and everything tries to be round..... The Sky is round, and I have heard that the earth is round like a ball, and so are all the stars. The wind, in its greatest power, whirls. Birds make their nest in circles, for theirs is the same religion as ours.... Even the seasons form a great circle in their changing, and always come back again to where they were. The life of a man is a circle from childhood to childhood, and so it is in everything where power moves. |

Hi all, natives and others...
When I was in early recovery a female part native was burning sage... I asked what that was and she told me...she told me she wanted to sage me, so I went along with it, she told me to pray while she was saging me. When she was done I truly felt at peace...It was so cool.. Since then I sage myself when I'm feeling good or down and afterwards I always feel calm and better...its a good feeling

I was blessed with Innu ancestors. They are the caribou people of Labrador Canada. Although they are little known they still thrive but are beggars
in their own land. The land robbed of nickel and other resources and left great empty holes in the place of fertile land and trees and clean water. They can no longer follow the caribou and live on reservations on the coast. I only know what has been passed down in words and some old pictures. With their way of life gone there is only alcohol and drunk adults with children that huff daily. Many suicides among the people. I learned to do many things from my Ojibwa partner (now passed) of how to use sage and sweet grass. Know the meaning of the drum and the sacred ways to live and show appreciation of all that the Creator has given us. All of these wonderful gifts are sacred and should be respected. The animals, the plants and mother earth. I attend powwows then they are held In summer and feel the presence of those gone on before me. We are all children of the earth and all animals are our brothers and sisters. We should use them as intended and give thanks for their lives we take to survive and never hurt or abuse them. ty for this site. |
