Light a candle

I have an outstanding student who I look forward to talking to after class about everything from soccer to science fiction. He's a bright, thoughtful, responsible student, father, husband and coach, and I see he has a lot to give the world. But his life has taken a very different turn in the last few weeks.

In tournament play a couple weeks ago, he suffered a mild concussion after a collision with another player. He didn't lose consciousness, and he seemed fine. So he continued to play.

A week later, another player's swinging leg made full contact with his head. This time he did lose consciousness. And since that concussion, he's gone steadily downhill. His depth perception has been changed. He's been more disoriented, nauseous and unable to focus or adjust to bright lights.

I'm lighting a candle for him. He had a hard enough beginning, and I want him to have his health and life back and have a chance at something more once again.

leaving light for belief and hope....
for all of us.

My students never cease to amaze me and I genuinely enjoy their enthusiasm and hope and curiosity. But it's hard to watch them go through what they do taking care of children and parents, working full time and going to school and balancing all of this.

One of my student recently told me that her mother was in the hospital with stage IV cancer and that the cancer had spread to her brain at this point. She was trying hard not to cry in front of me.

Another student lost both grandparents in a car accident last week. My student is veteran of Afghanistan and someone who clearly is about herself. But I could see how deeply this was affecting her.

So I'm lighting a candle this week for both of these students and for all the folks struggling with the sickness and loss of the ones they love.

Whenever someone awakens fully, it affects human consciousness at a collective level. It is like dropping a stone into a dark murky pond. Ripples of light... Not one word need be spoken.
