I have to admit that I am tired of celebrities having so much going on and patting them selves on their back on any occasion . Who cares about they divorces , engagements , plastic surgeries , sex tapes , etc .
We as everyday people going through the same things such as divorce or separation from loved one , but without millions , working hard and some of us still can't meet our needs . There are people struggling to put food on the table , foreclosures and homeless . I personally helped people in need and gives me more satisfaction than Oscar . I don't needed , but I know I have done right thing for humanity . I am sick and tired of Kardashians being everyday in news . I never watch they show , but everyday you click on news they are in . They morals are so bad and we as a gay people still being view as second class citizens as I said before I have been out for too many years and I am really tired of a homophobic people they are thinking we are some perverts , when they are more perverted than we are and don't even know we are everyday people like them . |

Oh I hear what you are saying, Vlasta, but for me the Oscars are special. I don't see it as anything other than recognizing some folks for the work they do. And the entertainment industry is so very important. It is because of Hollywood and the independent studios as well that we get documentaries like "911" or "Fork over Knife" (not the right name) or movies that inspire us like "Joyful Noise" which I haven't seen.
So I would rather seek the joy in the Oscars. I love Oscar night. I love the glitter, the glamour, the glee. I love watching truly stunned winners babble. I love watching the smug superior winners get choked up. I just adore the Oscars. And I'm glad this thread is here for those of us who do love it. It's a fun way to connect with others who share my love. I also watch every other award show that I can. Some people are reality show junkies. Me? I'm down for the award show every time. I do think your statement has validity. Maybe it would be a good post for one of the discussion areas? Let folks chew on it more there where they can not be divided by those of us who are here to pass a good time about the Oscars. ![]() |

I love the Oscars and always watch them!
When we were little, my Mom would bake a big chocolate cake and the family would all gather around the TV to watch the glitz and glamour....oh what a happy memory! |

I love the Oscars too!
It gives me a glimpse of movies I probably would not have come across and it is also, as Arwen says, is a recognition for some really amazing work some people do. I could care less about the gossip. I have acquired two of the movies in the Best Picture category and plan to watch them this weekend. MsTinkerbelly, when I was little they were in black and white and it was very special to watch them here. It was one of the few shows from the States that was televised live and of course the translation of the local host was awful, but we didn't care. Arwen, I agree, and like you, I like watching award shows. Once I watch some of the movies, I will be able to make my picks. |

WOW, this year there are some really fine nominations. I like the Oscars too even though I prefer independent films mostly (in terms of going to see a film). Yet, some of the more mainstream (The Artist & War Horse, Iron Lady- just two) movies this past year have been amazing.
I won't be able to catch up on all of them and see them in a theater (really is my favorite way), but will watch the Oscars. I love it when a "sleeper" makes it way to the Oscars. |

I didn't mean to disrupt this thread with my opinion and upset the fans of the Oscars , for that I apologize . I agree with you to a certain point. As far I am concerned another award show for playing make believe. Perhaps Hollywood could "donate" one of these self congratulatory events to teachers of America? Or to fire men, or policemen, or the other heroes, like returning soldiers?, who put their lives out there with barely a nod from the general public. Celebrities are one of the few groups who have the money to do this. Where is Leonardo DiCapprio's nomination? He was phenomenal in J Edgar. They just passed over him completely after his Golden Globe nomination. Unreal! Hugo was good; and I also like War Horse; but other than that, some of the listed movies really were not that great. The Iron Lady isn't even among the Best Pictures. Politics as usual if you ask me. . peace Vlasta |

We saw Albert Nobb's tonight...disappointing at best. Glenn Close was okay, the writing and story are what did it in...weak and mostly uninteresting.
