I'll tell you secrets so good
You'll never tell a soul Come closer, that bonfire holds his life like stones My years, my life unknown Star crossed child's love on the bands of wedding gold Silver studs of promise hide in the red crushed velvet folds Inaction, intention, like emeralds I stole My speech of custom gold I think I ought to know |

Unsinkable ships, sink
Unbreakable walls, break Sometimes the things you think would never happen Happen just like that Unbendable steel, bends If the fury of the wind is unstoppable I've learned to never underestimate The impossible

Ella Mae - the red wings returned today
A little rain fell in the morning The afternoon was clear And that song you loved to hear Was filling up the fence row where the birds all go To talk over their long journey and sing. Ella Mae - all the gifts you gave Tremble in my life like a startled deer You gave me my Pa Who is in me as you are And the southern piny hills The clear water and the running rills That tumbled through the lives of us all. Six big men and one big strong woman You and little Grandpa David raised up there They all had families Who all come back to see you You hugged us all in turn Cocked you head and said we'd grown And touched us with your hands That smelled like bread Ella Mae - it's a clear warm summer's day The young birds are trying out their wings Ah it's something to see them try To get up there and fly And my own child is bound to do the same Today she learned three birds' names. Ella Mae - I can see you plain as day Sailing out like a ship to your garden In your old wide-brim straw hat With a long handled hoe in your hand. pausing at the gate I see you look south to the pond A long time quiet smile on your face. Ella Mae - when your David went away After cutting brush all day long Well, your life just slowly closed Like a worn out autumn rose You could not find the bread You could not make your lonesome bed Or really do a thing but rise and go. Ella Mae - the red wings left today Passing in a long cloud of wings They're headed down your way They'll be there in a couple of days They'll sing that song you loved As they fly above Your resting place by David in the pines.

The absence of God will bring you comfort, baby
And planning's for the poor so let's pretend that we're rich And I'm not my body or how I choose to destroy it Folk singers sing songs for the working, baby We're just recreation for all those doctors and lawyers There's no relief for the bleeding heart 'Cause they'll be losing bodies tonight And Rob says you love, love, love and then you die I've watched him while sleeping and seen him crying with closed eyes And you're not happy but you're funny and I'm tripping over my joy But I just keep on getting up again We could be daytime drunks if we wanted We'd never get anything done that way baby And we'd still be ruled by our dueling perspectives And I'm not my perspective Or the lies I'll tell you every time And Morgan says, maybe love won't let you down All of your failures are training grounds And just as your back's turned you'll be surprised she says As your solitude subsides And Mike I'll teach you how to swim If you turn the bad in me into good again And I say there's trouble When everything is fine The need to destroy things Creeps up on me every time Just as love's silhouette appears I close my eyes and disappear tonight And something's got to change 'Cause our love's the slowest moving train
