I prefer lake fishing with a bobber and worm. But since we live on the ocean now I'm going to have to try this. Frankly ocean fishing scares me. I've been planning on trying the bay as it seems easier and the water is calmer, almost flat. Can I use a bobber in a bay?

Melissa, I think you can use your bobber anywhere you choose to fish. Being able to see it and keep track of it in some waters is another thing. I personal like bottom fishing, but if I do use a bobber, it will be a slip bobber. I think they are a better choice than the clip on kind. When I bottom fish, I am always watching my line and usually have a finger on it near my reel, so I can feel it anything may hit on my bait. I almost always use worms, but will go to artificial every now and then.

I prefer worms to artificial as have rarely caught anything with artificial bait. They use shrimp here in the ocean and bay so I will give that a try.

Well artificial bait is tricky. Depends on what type of fish you want what time of year and what time of day it is. Grasshoppers are good bait. I love vienna sausages too, not sure why but I have a lot of luck with those. Croppy and catfish love them. Maybe the smell who knows.

I'll try vienna sausages . For catfish bait I am a huge fan of wheeties cereal and make wheetie balls and dip them in chicken liver blood . Thanks for the vienna sausage tip buddy

I got this idea from feeding some turtles in a pond one day on a picnic with my niece. So good luck with it. I usually cut the little sausages length wise once then in half once so I have 4 equal peices and put them on a hook, I do use a bobber like wolfy does and a few weights to sink my line , because catfish like to hide low so the farther down in the water the better off you are. Kind of stick close to the shore line too .

I used to have trouble with artificial bait too, until I went fishing with some buddies at work who are serious fisherman, they taught me alot.

Question

I enjoy fishing for large mouth bass, and usually use medium-sized shiners...which seem to work pretty well. But is there another type of bait that might work even better?

I agree with wolfy here . You can use a bobber anywhere but the water needs to be some tame . They do make large ocean bobbers . Like wolfy said I keep my finger feeling the line .
