Wow, I loved SisterSpace, I attended back in 99. There was a singer there named Dani, She was great, I think I still have her CD packed away somewhere.

Default Camping in High Desert

Camping in the high desert of NM is what I've enjoyed for many years. Am planning to head back in early Spring or Summer, G-d how I miss it.

Yes, I know H2O will have to be brought in, check. I enjoy primitive sites where I can hike during the mornings, and be back at camp for the late afternoon, build my campfire, and enjoy the stars kicking back.

Does anybody use the swedish firesteel? I was thinking of getting it as a present for an avid camper.

Default Camping

ScandalAndy,

Its a fun way to start a fire, I would also recommend the maya dust (pine shavings) which can be used even in wet conditions. Would they like it? All depends on what kind of camping your friend enjoys.

They are also into primitive camping, like yourself. Once a year they indulge in a campsite with bathrooms, but the rest of the time it's all about being out in the woods with a map and compass. Thanks for the Maya Dust recommendation. It was offered with the firesteel but I wasn't sure if it was worth getting too.

a lot of people I know use them and I've seen them work great. I personally have this one:

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/SE-FS374-Emergency-Fire-Starter/dp/B0010O748Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1353956554&sr=8-1&keywords=fire+starter"]Amazon.com: Emergency Fire Starter: Sports & Outdoors[/ame]

They all pretty much work the same and you need to get the stroke and kindling right. I keep mine with my trailer keys in my SUV all the time. You never know. lol

I love being in the woods. For all intent and purposes I kinda live in the woods. I'm lucky that I am close to the Blue Ridge and many other wonderful spots. I had a guy come help me on the farm one summer/fall who had a truck, a dog and an old army wall tent. He wanted to camp down by the creek. He lived in his tent and truck. He was very self sufficient too. he even had a little wood stove for his tent. I wanted him to stay but he said he enjoyed moving about. He said he has camped in below zero. I love camping but couldnt imagine that,
