I watched part of an episode, yes only part, because I found it to be so totally against what this site promotes! I find it interesting that there are so many feminists and "lesbian pride" women on this site that would promote a such a show that shows lesbian women in a negative mindset. As far as talking to other women about their "pussy tastes so good", how to have sex, having a "prison wife".
Prison life is being glorified in this show, and you are ok with lesbians being shown in this light? I am completely shocked by the reactions on this thread about the show, and the excitement displayed of seeing lesbians portrayed in this manner. I for one, won't be watching. |

But it cracks me up. Maybe because I see myself in so many of the characters. For me, its relevant, hysterically funny and even heartwarming. It holds nothing back. I know those people. It speaks truth.

Interesting. I don't find the show to be anti-feminist, anti-lesbian, or anti-woman at ALL. As a matter of fact, it feels very REAL to me. I'm not sure it glorifies prison at ALL. Maybe if you watched more than one episode, you might realize issues like rape, transphobia, lesbian phobia, misogyny, racism, classism, drug abuse, and much more are dealt with.
I don't think there's anything wrong with talking about how good someone's pussy tastes, or about how to have sex, or anything along that matter. It seems sex positive to me rather than portraying lesbians in a bad light. I don't see where saying those things is misogynistic in and of themselves. Also--the stuff about having a prison wife? I'm pretty sure that's based in the realities of being in prison. I also don't see where prison life is glorified. From what I've seen--prison is the LAST fucking place I'd want to be!!!!! However, I also think that women in a situation like that are of course going to form relationships and alliances and have successes and failures. I think their humanity is what is being shown. I dunno, it's hard to analyze when you have only seen part of an episode, but I'm interested in what others think? |

I would challenge anyone (as I challenged myself, after I made assumptions about what this show was about) to at least watch 4 episodes (give it a chance), and get to know a few characters before making a decision. Maybe it won't change your mind, maybe it will.
Personally, I can assure you, that after watching the entire season, I am still a proud, strong, stone-femme, feminist woman. And frankly, I do not feel like enjoying this show should leave us open to being questioned about which direction our moral compasses point, as members of this amazingly diverse and welcoming community. For me, I found the characters to be wonderful examples of utterly and entirely fallible human beings. I love that they have flaws and strengths. The characters are raw, vulnerable, sexy, loving, kind, mean, fat, skinny, old, young, gay, lesbian, straight, bi-sexual, MTF, butch, femme, confused, uncertain, religious, not religious, have mental health issues, disabilities, drug problems, successes, failures...etc...etc...I love that so many of them are owning their shit, and growing, despite being incarcerated. I love that this show brings up every ism on every spectrum imaginable, and throws these isms in the viewers' face, so they can see exactly how ugly and stupid isms really are. I would be insulted if the characters back stories and current experiences were less fucked up, or less heartbreaking, or if the primary characters were weak, pretty (average 20-30 year old straight male viewers' version of pretty), straight women who were LWIP (lesbians while in prison), who were prayed upon by the scary godless lesbians. Luckily, that is not what is happening on this program. |

The show is about a HUGE VARIETY of women... I don't know a SINGLE other show anywhere that has this much visibility??!!?? WOC, age, class, background, size, health, butch, lesbian... the list can seriously go ON. There are THAT many. It's cool! I'll take OISTNB visibility of lesbians over the bubblegum BS the "L Word" was promoting ANY DAY! The million dollar lesbians of Southern California? Paaahleeze.... and the "L word" was NEVER FUNNY. So some of the lesbian characters on the show talk about pussy? So what? Lots of lesbians talk about pussy, fucking and enjoy it. What's completely different about OISTNB is that it is not being **wrapped up w/a bow** for the male gaze and heterocentric consumerism. GOOD! I'm glad. Lesbian visibility is important AND lesbian sex is AWESOME!! lol!! Lesbian Pride is important and sex is part of being a lesbian.

Well, I am not sure this site is "promoting " anything specific. However I feel BFP supports (by way of venues discussed here on BFP) a vast gallery of what is reflected in our community. Be that LDR's, people who love puppies and/or kittens, political interest, poems, fisting, BDSM, packing, strapping, flogging and fucking and so much more. Search the forums and you can find multiple topics on all those I mentioned and more so! I don't feel like prison life is glorified in OITNB, and I am fine with the light shed on lesbians being portrayed as they are in this show. I feel the reality of the show is pretty accurate. I have over the past 35 years as an out lesbian on many occasions talked about pussy tasting good, BTW that is not just specifically lesbian related. How to have sex is also discussions I have had with partners, I love the openness of taking about such things, it sure does make things smoother in the fisting department! I do not feel as if this show diminishes my "lesbian pride" with the topics Orange has played out. This show includes straight and lesbian/butch/MTF/bi women together and I LOVE THAT! I look forward to there being more added to that list in time! It is not all slanted one way or the other. Not sure why a prison wife would be any different than saying wife, other than to make obvious they are in a prison setting. I have never been in prison, so some things I cannot speak of or elaborate on......but I am learning. Do I want to go to prison (glorified) because of Orange? Ummm NOPE! Jodi Foster was involved in some of the directing!! <swoon> I would love to see her have an acting role!! Someone else mentioned about truth, and I don't see any lies being fed to us in that the truth and honesty is not only reflected.....it is projected and I feel it. I hear it. I embrace it as a learning experience. I am reflecting on past relationships because of what I am hearing and seeing, I am relating by being a female first.....SO I am not all consumed by Orange, but fascinated! Yes sex happens in this show, but such is life! And besides, those moments are few and in between the day to day events. I hope you or anyone else who has any doubts would/will watch an episode or two. There have been many times in my life that I did not agree with something as a lesbian, but still supported those events in my life. This is the first season of a developing show and its always a little rough cutting a path. It is tastefully done! I respect that you have your opinion, and that this show seemingly offends you Guy. My opinion being opposite does not make me any less of a feminist, nor has it diminished my lesbian pride. I find it "interesting" that you think it does because I support and promote this show. It is the positive of this show that is appealing to me. |

I don't think the L Word necessarily promoted lesbians in the most positive of lights, so I don't quite see how this series differs much. If anything, it's not all about sex, and the L Word tended to be 75% lady-part lovin'. Ya might want to give it a whirl some day.

Nicki is *totally* my kinda butchie. I dunno if that character would ID that way but holy mary mother of god that gal is HAWT.
super wise cracking smart-ass, a little bit tough on the surface, smudgy black eyeliner, hilarious, dirty flithy fucker with a dirty mouth. Little bit messy, little bit vulnerable. fork. done. Also Poussey. She does make me giggle on the inside. I could totally fall in love with a gal like that. Nicki I would crash for, chemistry to the ceiling, more than likely she'd make me mental and then hurt me (long history with these ones) and then I'd want Poussey to swoop in, be my friend, and kiss it all better, show me some fine, fine lovin' and I'd make her lunches and be her girl. <3 there I've just mapped out my life with the characters on the show that twist my knickers. |

As for the other characters...
Crazy eyes, yeah when I saw her I thought PHWOAR! who's that!!!! And I do like them a little unstable, but that's a bit to crazy, even for me. the peeing on the floor I could handle, no problem - I've dealt with worse. It's the "I threw a pie for you..." in that tone of voice that unnerved me. Plus people that more that fast, freak the shit out of me. But her holding her hand and sharing her headset was super, super sweet and she is incredibly gorgeous. In fact she's damn beautiful. the only characters that puts me off is boo and piper. I dunno, something about the way boo talks *really* puts me off... I wouldn't go there. Piper would be like antimatter to me. Just her whole manner and personality. She's annoying. well, and the southern psychos-clan meth-heads. I can't deal with that kind of stuff. I'd probably scream and swat at them like a big poof. I certainly wouldn't kick Alex out of my bed. I think she'd probably make me say aaaaaaalllllll kinds of things, aaaaaanything she wanted.... It's just so nice to see a program with women in it I'm *actually* attracted to for *once*. I got so excited about that I accidentally watched the whole thing in three days. But I have casual sex, I enjoy other people's bodies, they enjoy mine, we joke about all while knowing that other people are humans. I can appreciate a fine, fine ass AND know that the person it's on has a life and feelings. I have friends that tell me "hey, nice rack barb!" "Fanks!" If I know the person? I don't really care, I've even sent friends some of my work shots (erotic modeling) cause they if really like it, I like my work appreciated. it's really hard work, it's exhausting, the shoots are 12 hours long and there are almost no breaks and I can't get untrussed. So it's actually nice to be told "these shots are great!" etc. Is it objectifying? yes. But I don't find it disrespectful. I find it playful and... they still somehow interact with *me* on some level. That's what I hear in those dialouges. wistful, appreciative, and even with dirty casual sex that happens only one time, you can both connect if you are both present and willing. I still give myself over. So objectification does not have to be clinical, cold or distancing. I know how it feels when someone is *in it* and objectifying, or *not*. the latter is disgusting and feels ick, the former is actually a huge turn on for me. Context is a HUGE part of it. But that's just me. Many people just don't work that way/aren't wired that way, so they don't get it or don't understand. |

I used to watch Oz. It didn't mean I glorified prison life. I am a lesbian so I get to say what I personally enjoy. We have so few depictions of lesbians on TV, I will take what I can get. Lesbians go to prison. Just like straight people. Just like gays. Just like transfolk. I love that all of us can chose what we like and don't like on TV. My remote sure comes in handy for things like that.
