I'm so sorry to wake you up at this hour with this news, but as you know your brother is extremely critical and is declining to the point where its coming to the end . I've spoke with the critical care doc and the renal doc , he is maxed out on 4 pressor meds, and his pressure is not maintaining at all, his potassium is still critically high despite being on emergent dialysis and the cocktail lowering drip and neurologically he isn't doing anything. Is there anyway you can come in and bring his wife and the rest of the family in ???

Patients brother : I have only been sleeping for 4 hours so no I can't come in but ill come in tomorrow afternoon to see him.

Me: Mr xxxx im unsure if he will make it another hour at this point at 2 am , that's why I'm calling you to come now if all possible , he is this unstable .

Patients brother : well call me if he doesn't make it and we will go from there

Me : since you are the decision maker , do you care to call his wife and update her since he is doing so bad ?

Patients brother : I'd rather not but Blake you can call her and update her

Me : ok, thank you , ill do that and I'm sorry again

Me : Mrs xxxxx this is Blake and we spoke two days ago on the phone briefly when he first came down to our unit from the first floor . Im so sorry to call you at this hour with this update but I spoke to your brother in law and this is what is going on . Is there any way you and your family can come into be with your husband tonight as he isn't doing well and is not going to hold on much longer I'm afraid.

Patients wife : Blake , thank you for calling me this is horrible news I was afraid of this call but Blake I have IBS and I can't come there bc I have to be near a toilet at all times .
Do you know how aweful IBS is ? Its aweful to have , I've had this for years and am so sickly with IBS . I've been to the doctor and its the worse thing in the world .

Me : thank you mam I have to get back to work but ill tell him you love him and ill update you again .

WHAT THE #$%& is wrong with people !!!!!! Now this is messed up.
Ill gladly put a potty chair at his bedside so you can crap while holding your dying husbands hand so he doesn't die alone with no family geez .
Shakes head . It would be nice to say what you feel.
I can so completely relate to this that it's sad. I have no idea what is wrong with people. I once had a declining patient's son and daughter-in-law come to visit and ask me "How long is she going to last? Is she going to die tonight? We don't really live too close so if she's going to die tonight let us know so we don't have to make the trip back again." After this same patient passed, I called them to advise them and asked which funeral home they wanted me to contact. The daughter-in-law asked "Why?" I had to bite my tongue to keep from saying "Because she DIED!! Would you rather just bring a shovel??"

Ok...one more and then I'll stop because, trust me, I could fill up this thread with stories from by first year of nursing alone!

We had a 94 year old man come in, brought in by his family. Apparently, he had been driving and hit another parked car. He left the scene and went home. Because he sustained some bruises from the accident, his family brought him in. During his assessment, we realized that this man had dementia, nearly end stage. We brought this up to his family which they, of course, denied. Dad was just FINE! He still drives, and gets around ok, and he's fine! Yeah, he still drives...and hits other cars without even realizing it (thank god it wasn't a child!), and he doesn't speak...merely parrots back what he's asked (ex. What's your name? Reply: Your name. How do you feel Mr. X. Reply: Feel Mr. X.) We realized WHY his family was so anxious to have him released and so adamant that he was lucid, when they revealed that they just bought a new house and good ol' dad's social security check was paying their mortgage. *smh*

Are you SURE you don't work at my hospital ???? West Virginia ?????
It sounds like we are conversing about the same people here !!!!!!

Ok one more What the ?+&%

80 year old mamaw brought in via back of pickup truck .
She was hanging laundry on the line outside .
Family drinking on back porch watching her some many yards away.
They hear her yelling help and screaming and flailing her arms about in the air and they see something on her arm which from a distance looks like a cable .
They run to her and a copperhead has bitten her arm and the fangs are snagged up in her sweater . They do the most sensible thing ( sarcasm )

They pick mamaw up, toss her in the tail of the pickup and drive her 45 min to our e.r. where she is now in cardiac arrest . The er cuts the snake in half and pries the fangs off and deals with that ordeal .

Lets leave the snake attached 45 min drive with her in the truck back gate . She comes to our unit bc its a trauma .
She arrests two more times and doesn't make it .
The family doesn't want to make funeral arrangements however they are irritated bc our e.r. discarded the copperhead bc they can use the snakeskin for sale to vendors ?????

What the !@#$

I can add to the medical ones...

Mrs. Patient Wife: Is Dr. O in today?

Me: He is in surgery today, can I have him call you back?

Mrs. Patient Wife: I guess you can help me with a refill? My husband needs a refill on his asthma meds.

Me: We can refill the meds for you, if he has been in recently.

Mrs. Patient Wife: Oh, he comes in all time.

Me: Then it should not be an issue. Let me pull his chart for the respiratory therapist. Do you want to hold or do you want her to call you back? It may be a few minutes.

Mrs. Patient Wife: I'll hold.

I get the chart, hand it to the RT, tell her what is going on and she takes the call.

Ten minutes later, she comes back and asks what Mrs. Patient Wife called about. I told her (and thank God someone heard my end of the call). The RT told me the call ended this way after enough time to get the chart, talk to the RT, her take the call, confirm the info and get the pharmacy info...

RT: Ok, Mrs. Patient Wife, I will get this called in for him right now so that you can pick it up today.

Mrs. Patient Wife: Do y'all have samples I can come get?

RT: Let me check, can you hold a few minutes while I check the closet or do you want me to call you back?

Mrs. Patient Wife: I'll hold.

And upon returning...

RT: We have that, you can pick it up anytime before 5.

Mrs. Patient Wife: That won't be a problem. Is Dr. O in yet? My husband is not breathing and turning blue so I am getting worried about him. How long will Dr. O be in surgery?

TISFU with a little WTF added in.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/1...#slide=2967047
Snippet from article.
"A Ku Klux Klan rally planned for Saturday, Oct. 5 has been canceled because of the government shutdown.

On Sept. 26, officials at Gettysburg National Military Park granted a special-use permit for a rally to a Maryland-based KKK group. According to NBC 10 Philadelphia, the event was canceled when park officials rescinded all permits for special events because of the shutdown, which began 12 a.m. ET on Tuesday."

I say,
It is so messed up that these people exist. Of course they have to hide
behind masks because their morals are so fed up.

So, awwwww...the tea party republicans and other racists in washington had to cancel their rally because they might be on the Hill instead; national park or not.

One more

Wife of pt 3 years ago : um sir , his skin looks yellow is that normal ?

Me : no mam its not normal , he is yellow , he has liver failure so his bilirubin is high which gives him a yellow color .

Her : ohhhh ok ....... Comes back the second time minutes later . Um sir his eyes are yellow , is that normal. ?????

Me : no mam its not normal but he has liver failure so the yellowish of his eyes , skin etc is yellow bc of the bilirubin etc.... So when ones liver is failing and the bilirubin is extremely high its expected to be that color .

Her : comes back the third time ... Um sir there is a bag hanging from the bed that has bright orange water in it ..?????

Me : yes mam that's his catheter bag and the liquid is his urine .

Her : sir is urine supposed to be bright orange ?

Me : no mam , he has liver failure , his urine is concentrated , his bilirubin is very high I'm actually coming in to talk to you in a moment in the room about him .

My charge nurse : dude this is why you have that patient today bc we have all had our turn dealing with his wife

Me : I hate you charge nurse

I kept saying to myself , um I'm not yellow , nobody at this desk is yellow , your not yellow so why would you think your husband's yellow highlighter skin would be normal ?????
