![]() Something, Anything i'm so picky that when i watch i'm always afraid the movie will be too similar to the rest out there. But i thought this movie & what it stands for was amazing. The ending is especially what got me. Definitely a breath of fresh air & way better than i even expected. A new favorite.

This past weekend I watched Dallas Buyer's Club - excellent movie. Matthew did a great job in working his character. Just affirms what most of us already know in regards to insurance companies and pharmas. Glove and hand.
Then I watched The Fault in our Stars - I was so afraid this was going to be a "chick" flick. (not that there is anything wrong with them) Which I guess to a certain extent it was. However, the premise of the movie was so touching - and the actors so good - that it never felt like that that glossy-cotton candy type movie. I am glad I decided to watch it. The soundtrack to it was wonderful as well.

Last night we caught Ride on Demand. Hunt as a helicopter mother of a 19 year old. It may not be for everyone, it's one of those comedies that then takes a more serious tone. The actor who plays her driver has some pretty good scenes as well. If you're a fan of Helen Hunt and Luke Wilson, check it and see what you think

Loved it! Wild, entertaining, exciting and had an almost steampunk vibe (to me):
Mad Max! 98% critics rating on Rotten Tomato's when I checked last night. I should also say that I just love action movies. The girlfriend does not, so she wasn't crazy about it but we take turns seeing flicks the other wants to see.

Still Alice, it was about Alzheimer's, early onset of it.
Julianne Moore was the lead actress and did a superb job. A tear jerker for sure.

I had some free tix so I went to see this and Age of Adaline today. Both were excellent in their respective genres. Anya, you are right....Mad Max is steampunk driven, given the nature of the storyline. There were some truly and fantastically incredible visuals! It gives you perspective to know that the vehicle chase scenes in the movie took more than half of the total time put into the film. Several months and it showed. Thrilling action flick! I do have to say one thing though....if I were in the war party and I had to listen to that guy play the guitar for the hours and hours they must have been driving, I would have shot someone in the face. ![]() This was quality in all aspects. The story was well put together, the acting was good and it was interesting and even though it involved something not entirely realistic, everything else was as I expected if such an event did occur. I won't elaborate to conserve the integrity of the story but it was very, very good. |

I've been told the turn of phrase for settings like those of Mad Max is "dieselpunk." I think it fits well enough, even if you could call it more gasolinepunk or petrolpunk or whatev.
Anyway, I just saw it today (with my first cousin once removed), and it was bloody glorious. I don't really even watch movies, let alone action movies, but it was an excellent piece of cinematography: a film that works because it's a film and because the entire work was designed from the ground up for a visual medium, as opposed to all the movies out there that work better as books. No scene or visual is wasted: every single one tells you something about the world and the people in it, and well enough so that you can grasp what's going on even with very little dialogue, owing both to the quality of the scene-setting and the quality of the acting. You don't have to be told what's going on, because you can see it clearly, in a way so well-presented that it makes the unbelievable believable. It's an action movie, and yet it works as well as it does because it has a narrative and a world that feel real, and because the narrative isn't a flimsy justification for what's happening on-screen but rather is what's happening on-screen. It also fits a great deal into two hours as a result of being fast-paced and not lingering on anything more than it needs to, but is still put together with enough skill that it's easy to follow in spite of this. The only real challenge is enduring the sheer intensity, because it is a very visually rich and powerful work. There may be sensory overload. Also, it manages to be very creepy and intense and tackle profoundly dark subject matter while somehow showing the restraint to not degenerate into a vulgar exploitation flick. It's definitely an R-rated movie, with violence and with segments that made me squirm a bit, and yet it avoided violence for the mere sake of titillation and limited itself to what actually served the narrative. This may be part of the complete lack of wasted time, where for being a two-hour movie it is nonetheless very concise and only shows what actually serves the experience. It's entirely possible that quite a bit ended up on the cutting-room floor. Suffice it to say there's a lot that can be said about the movie without spoiling it, because what makes it great isn't simply the plot itself but how that plot is executed. I am still left wondering one thing, though. The conventional wisdom is that action movies don't make their money off of women viewers. I find myself wondering if that holds true for Fury Road--or if it would hold true if more action movies were like it. |

We finally saw "Far from the Madding Crowd" this evening.
It was a period piece; not something i go to on purpose, but my Kasey likes that type of thing. Great movie! I laughed and cried, and for a couple of hours lost myself in the romance. |

Winnie Mandela : "South Africa's Winnie Mandela, one of the most galvanizing public figures in modern history, comes to life in this absorbing biopic." with Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard
This moving was indeed interesting to watch. However, I am not convinced it depicts the depths of the true story. I knew some of this story prior to watching it and continued on with additional research about the Mandela families fight. There is much more to the story than this (as in any movie)...I am not sure how I feel about her yet. While I researched her story I found myself on an emotional roller coaster of admiration, disappointment, disgust in a never ending ride of all spectrums of each emotion. War can cause a man or women to do things that they would have never thought to do...sometimes they loose themselves all together. |

Fantastic. Absolutely well-done and I have such an appreciation for Helen Mirren. She's phenomenal. This movie was so, so, so good. Based on a true story, it will make you laugh and cry. Possibly simultaneously. |

After trying to watch three OTHER movies on Netflix...none kept my interest... I found...
3 Days to Kill with Kevin Costner. I don't find him to be a dazzlingly good actor, but he has a certain something that makes him fun to watch. The movie was good.

Last night I watched:
Lee Daniels' The Butler After leaving the South as a young man and finding employment at an elite hotel in Washington, D.C., Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker) gets the opportunity of a lifetime when he is hired as a butler at the White House. Over the course of three decades, Cecil has a front-row seat to history and the inner workings of the Oval Office. However, his commitment to his "First Family" leads to tension at home, alienating his wife (Oprah Winfrey) and causing conflict with his anti-establishment son. I have not seen such a poignant movie in quite some time. I tend to watch movies that make you think (from time to time) - especially about things that are relevant to our present and/or past. This one did exactly that. If you have not seen it, you should. |
