Thinkin' I'm gonna love it and will have to get one for myself too!
I just checked out some Kindle library books last night. It's awesome! Assuming your library works the same way mine does, you go to the library website and login. Then you find the books you want (apparently it's a really popular program because most of the ones I wanted were already out. In that case, you place a hold and they'll notify you when it's your turn to check out the book). After you check out the books you want on your library website you'll be automatically redirected to Amazon, where there's a button you click to send the books to your Kindle. I'm making it sound a lot more complicated than it actually is.

Announced just today is the new Kindle Fire...looks like a small ipad. I have an ipad, and I MUCH prefer the regular Kindle for reading. The quality is so similar to the way a real book looks...the kindle on my ipad makes me tired, and I can't read it in the sunlight.

My point is...I'm not sure this new Kindle will be such a great improvement on an already wonderful product.

very interesting. I have no clue as to the technology behind it.. but it seems weird that they could run "out" of an electronic book... must learn more...

It's part of the license agreement. Libraries have to treat ebooks just like paper books. So if they have 3 licenses for a particular title, then 3 people can have the ebook checked out at one time. If someone else wants the same title, they have to wait until the previous person's time with the book has run out.

Concept is that a library can only afford so many copies of a title right? Each copy they get is bought (which means the publisher gets paid so the editor/copy editor/author etc get paid.)

Each copy then gets loaned out X number of times before it has to be replaced.

The same ideology has been applied to e-books on loan. And apparently the number of times it can be loaned out varies by publisher. I was told by a librarian that Harper-Collins cuts it off at 26 loans.

That's low even for a hardback.

But, the bottom line is just that. It's a money issue. Library books are great and I have the latest George R. R. Martin on my Kindle from my library. But I also hope folks have books (mine, lolol!) that they bought and paid for.

It's one of the reasons I am so adamantly against piracy. It's not sharing. It's theft.

Copying books for others? Theft.
Downloading from "free" sites? Theft.

If a book is free, the author will have it on their site. If it's not and you find it somewhere for "free", it is taking money out of more than one person's pocket.

And, for the record? I make anywhere between .18 and 2.30 for a book that is sold in the right way. So it's not a lot.

Yeah, I'll jump off my soapbox now. Can someone please give me hand down? It's kinda high up!

For the record.. I'm so anti piracy I drive my family nuts! lol

At this point in time nothing in my library (music, movie, book, etc) is pirated.

Nu uh.

Default I do not have a kindle

so I maybe in the wrong thread.

I do not own a kindle, but I do own a Nook, and I love it.
Question:

Has anyone used their E-reader (regardless of brand) for text books? I bought one with the hopes that it would be simpler and more ready for me to read, but I still find myself needing the hard copy to underline and highlight (yes I have tried using that technique with in the reader it is just not as conducive to page flipping to find the source).

What are your experiences? If any with text books?

I'll start off by saying I haven't done much highlighting / clipping on the Kindle. But that being said it does have the feature where you can do just that - then you go to the "clippings" section (I believe it's called) and your clipping will be there as well as the page / location. So I would imagine on the Kindle the hardest part would be letting go of the comfort of flipping and having the hard copy...

I know that for me - I keep my "to do" lists in word - but I just can't get away from printing it up to use as reference. Something about the paper - seeing it etc. I relate to it much better than a screen.

Yep. One of my textbooks for this semester is on my Kindle, as was one last semester. I get the ebook edition whenever one is available. That doesn't happen very often, but often enough that I can generally get at least one per semester. I'm hoping as ebooks get more popular, more textbooks will be available. Especially if they continue to be discounted from college bookstore prices as much as they generally have been so far.

I've been considering an Kindle for ages so that I can save shelf space and get rid of a load of novels. I'm glad I waited. I can't wait to read the reviews of the new Kindle touch. I don't plan to use it for text books, I need physical books for study. There aren't enough relevant history text books in the Kindle store anyhoo.

I don't have a kindle (yet *cough*) but blush does. I thought about buying an e-textbook or two and pilfering her kindle. It would be nice to be able to take all of my books to class and not break my back, but I'm a big fan of hard copy textbooks and highlighting and stuff too. Especially with my calculus classes.

The deciding factor for me, though, is the inability to sell it once I'm done with it. Even if I have to shell out 100 bucks initially for that book in hard copy, chances are good that I'll be able to sell it back for pretty close to that. If I spend 50 bucks on an e-book, then I've just spent 50 bucks with no way get any of that back.

I love the kindle for other books, though. Textbooks on 'em just aren't for me. At least for now.
