Back to the question of if poly/mono can work - in my experience it can. Sometimes it did, othertimes it didn't. I've had both types of relationships go up in purple polkadotted flames. I've been on both sides of each equation.
I have taken away many things from the experiences, most importantly (for me) is I realized neither is "better" just different. I can appreciate the uniqueness of each situation and also that what works for each person and couple, triad etc. is different. Your mileage will certainly vary..
